Are you musically diverse?

Tuesday, November 15, 2005 by Stupendous Man | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Last night I purchased four tracks from iTunes, and as I was looking through my library, I was kinda surprised at the variety of music I had. And we're talking about tracks that I listen to pretty often. The reason I found this surprising was because I'm a 41 year old, black male with a wife and a 3 year old son. Typically, you would think that my music preference would be 70's & 80's soul. But I have classical, country, rap, rock, r&b, jazz and alternative on my harddrive. Coldplay resides happily with Nelly; Alan Jackson often jams along with Micheal Jackson; And yes, Brittany Spears even hangs out on my computer. So anyway I'm wondering how many out there listen to more that what would be considered typical for your age, gender, race, etc.?

Hey, enquiring minds want to know

"I like both kinds of popular music...Country AND Western!"

Jokes aside, I think my tastes are pretty varied. Big British Invasion & 60's psychedelia fan also liking early and later punk, rockabilly, etc. I like bluegrass and blues, and more. I don't usually like Top-40 hits for some reason (country or pop or hip-hop).

I go from one extreme to the other. Niel Diamond to Alice Cooper...Mary Chapin Carpenter to Patty Smyth...I tend to go more for the singer/songwriter stuff, since I write myself. But I have a CD of a Pink that I blare when I'm driving, so go figure.

I really only listen to rock and rap music; I'm usually pretty picky about my music but will listen to new music if asked to. I am also not very fond of recent music; I only like a few bands to appear in the last few years.

I can't stand country and some Hip-Hop. I can somewhat tolerate Rap if it's the older stuff. I mostly listen to Metal and stuff along those lines.

I listen and will try all types of music... except country. For some reason I can't stand country. I tried and just couldn't stomach it.
But I happily listen to opera, dance, trance, alternative, punk, metal, rap, blues, gospel, experimental, classical, pop... you name it!

Everything from Alien Ant Farm to Zeppilin. The only music I don't REALLY get into is the Hip-Hop scene, all that gangsta rap and "Adult Contemporary".

My last girlfriend somehow turned me to Country, and my fav is the old hard rock/heavy metal: Iron Maiden, WASP, KISS, Metallica, and don't forget DIO.

When I need a lighter mood and no lyrics, you know something to work to and still be able to think straight, I go to my classical.

I love the Bluegrass sound, and I live in a region where you can find a lot of it. So, I'm cool with that.

Cant say im too diverse, as 70% of my hard drive has reggae music on it. Thats not to say i dont like any other genre, but i look at it like this:

"What music do i like? Music that sounds good to me."

For me, one of the most unusual things has been the fact that I have developed a taste for rock. Aerosmith & Pink Floyd are the two concerts I would most likely shell out a few buck to go and see. I hope I have as much energy as Steven Tyler when I'm in my 50's.

My"like" list starts with 1940's big band and goes up to just short of rap, but includes everything in between.

50's, 60's, 70's Rock, Disco Sucks (still have my tshirt somewhere)
Can't think of much I like from the 80's that wasn't a band from the 70's
Started listening to Alternative in the 90's still do

I consider the rock music world to consist of two era's.....before MTV and after. Before MTV the music had to be good. After MTV the music had to "look" good.

As for Country.....I like some "Real Country" (not "Young Country"). I also like what we always called Southern Rock until the "Young Country" genre adopted it (Skynrd, CDB, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, etc.)

I also like to work to Native American music (Sacred Spirit, Ah Nee Mah, Whitewind, etc.)

I've also discovered New Age and Gaelic both traditional and fusion. One of my favorites from the last few years is Seven Nations, check em out.

I see the 'both forms of music' one has been done...

so...

If it's Country, just play it backwards...that way the wife comes back and the dog is no longer dead, etc...

I'm really into the British rock/pop from the 60's....but to me it wasn't an invasion cos I used to live there.

I like all kinds of music really, except punk and rap, as neither appealed to me in any way. These days I mostly listen to blues or blues-rock, but I have a collection that includes some classical, country and western (mostly female artists), metal and heavy rock, reggae and stuff from the 30's, 40's and 50's.

My father was into the big bands of the 30's and 40's, so I guess some of his preferences rubbed off on me as I also have stuff of Harry James and Glenn Miller, etc.

My favourite instument is the electric guitar, and the more technically awesome it is played, the better I like it....Roy Buchanan being one of the greatest guitar virtuoso's that ever lived.

I never download music from the net, so all my music is purchased on CD, occasionally vinyl if there's no copy on CD. I have close to 900 CD's now, after years of collecting, many of which have been ripped to my PC media player so I can surf and listen to music without firing up my hi.fi.

Alan Jackson often jams along with Micheal Jackson;

As for MJ's CD's....still trying to teach the cat to play frisbee's

There's not much I don't care for. I listen to all forms of jazz with preference to early stuff. I like all kinds of classical although I've never liked opera. As for rock, I'm particularly fond of classical rock (60's to pre-disco). Can't stand for rap or metal.
