Child Safe!

Saturday, October 15, 2005 by Biglee1 | Discussion: DesktopX

Hi I am a relative newcomer to Desktop X and i wanted to know is there any child safe desktop themes out there? You know something where there is a limited number of choices open to the user I.E selected URL shortcuts / programs.

I'd like to give my daughter her own user profile on this PC and have the theme start as soon as she logs in? Is the even possible?

This is quite easily possible.
If you like, email me at [email protected] and i'll make one for you.

P.S. send the links and what you want it to do as well.

You know, what a great idea, there should be a "child safe" gallery. Hell if someone makes a SesameStreet Suite I'll use it. I'd do it, but honestly I do enough programming at work, I'm gonna be cross eyed at 35. This box will be the death of me yet.

As Tominated said, yes it's possible. But depending on how smart the kids are and how much experience they have, it's can be easy to get around. My daughter's 6, she doesn't get on the internet unless her mother or I put her on, she has her own logon that loads a theme I put for her. It's a limited account, I limited what shows in start and she has one object that loads that takes her to her installed games.

I started with "The Kid's Desktop" (how it shows in my list - but I think is called Kids World in the gallery Link )and then modified her a desktop theme.

I took litestep and created a "hazard free desktop" for my kids .. it only allowed them to access the games and stuff I specified...I havent tried it with DX yet as a "child proofer" .. but I imagine it should be effective ..

WOW.

You know, I never thought of that... the kid signs in and the DX theme tak over the desktop.

Anyone reading this, if you make a theme like this, I will be very willing to do everything i can to promote your sub_url site and website or blog.

I think our children are important and we should do more to care for them (and is the reason why I am spending so much money on doing something about it... but that is another story)

I'm glad you all think that this is a good idea. I know that if a kid is reasonably PC savvy that they could get around it, but for younger children i think is perfect.

I envisage a colourful background and big friendly icons and easy to read text. Not only is it easy to use but you can easily limit the choices open to the child and keep them and your PC safe.

I am planning a DX Theme for kids that will go with some of my cursors.  It will still be a couple of weeks though before it's done.

Have you looked at Brad's Kid's World: Link
.
I customized the heck out of it for my 3 yr old (now 5). And it works like a charm. I keep adding links to apps and websites as she has grown older.

The Cutest Desktop Link might make a good start for a chilren's desktop. I have not tried it yet so I can't say for sure.

From memory one of the default themes is a "limited access" type theme.

As a parent of an 8-yr-old Cub Scout, and a 10-yr-old Junior Girl Scout, who have their own logins and appropriate access, THANKS for this thread.

There was/is a theme somewhere for the incredibles, it could be modified to limit some things. The trick is to figure out how to block google, or any other search engine. Once there they can get to anywhere.
