I gave the second one a try -- followed everything but the whole thing ended up in one color. Any tips?

bootskin has to be in 4bit I believe. depending on the program you use, some programs don't scale the color down the way you want. Try Irfanview for after the pic is done. Open the pic in Irfanview and under image, decrease color depth. The progress bar has to be the same colors as the main I think. Never made a bootskin...have trouble just getting it to work.

at time, when i activate bootskin and try to start up my computer, the screen will just go black and the computer wont start, when i deactivate bootskin the problem dosnt occur, what should i do to prevent it from not starting up and keep bootskin activated?

Hello........had same thing on my old dell.......Click here https://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/ ........look for:Alternative Versions:
Some drivers and bios makers "break the rules" which can cause BootSkin to not work correctly. If you experience that, you can remove BootSkin by deleting \windows\system32\drivers\vidstub.sys. And then try one these alternative versions:
BootSkin 1.02
http://storage.stardock.com/files/bootskin102_free.exe
BootSkin 1.03
http://storage.stardock.com/files/bootskin103.exe
Hope this helps
