Indeed, the first signs of a battle between them was with the desktop search tools. It's easy to dismiss Google when viewed up against the juggernaut that is Microsoft but Google had absolutely not qualms going head to head with them and for a first time in a long time, a company looked sharp enough to take them on.
Google services just keep on flying out of those google labs and it's not just the rate they are doing it at, but the sheer quality of the services they are providing. Gmail for instance is just the webmail to end all webmails, their desktop search is the equal of anything on PC, Google talk is a new one and while it is incredibly simple, it does just what it says on the tin, no masses of options that just slow you down and most of the time you dont want anyway.
Google OS maybe a long way off however they have the talent at google, they have the brand name most people trust and they have shown their willingness to branch out of the search market and take on giants like Microsoft, fearlesly.
Just to clarify though, Google didn't have anything to do with creating the earth program, I believe that was a joint venture between nVidia and Keyhole. Google just moved in on it and bought it up.

I just downloaded Google Earth but haven't installed it yet.
I haven't installed Picasa yet either nor Google OTHER IM service Hello.
From what I read, the intergration between the apps and Blogger is supercalafragulistic (spell?).
I think Yahoo is the real compeditor to Google. MSN is playing catch up for real.
What I am wondering is when Google will step up to the plate with search clustering, job search, domain name registering and AJAX Web 2.0 everything.
I can only imagine a Google OS. I would take years to biuld. I can only see them coming out with it in 2010 is they use an existing OS (like SkyOS or BeOS).

I know people who don't understand the difference between being on the computer & being on the internet-- Not trying to be funny-- it's just a matter of never being on the PC without being online combined with zero interest in computers

I've never felt as comfortable using Google products and services as I have Yahoo's. Perhaps it has something to do with the high involvement with advertising, or maybe that they have several fingers in just about every internet pie. Whatever, I find it difficult to trust them, which is why I've always steered clear of them, so I sure as hell hope they don't take it over......or my future WC experiences may have to depend upon the mail 
One thing that did amuse me regarding Google, however, was an caricature type advertisement with a bearded head resembling that of Saddam's being pulled from one of the O's, and the caption reading something like this: "See, Google can find anything!"

Google's "do no evil" works just as long as they do no evil.
I lke Google. I really do. Nevertheless, I don't use Google email for nothing more than job search.
Someone could say that using it for that reason could be enough for Google to know about me, what I earn and where I live... and signing up for Google Search probably would also garner more info on me that can be used by the gorverment to lock me up because I search for 'Taliban' far too many times for their liking...
Oh well.

I'm not going to get too deeply into privacy issues here but it's worth pointing out that Google staff do not read your gmails, software just scans it for keywords that it uses to display on topic advertising. if you objected to that then you should not use any webmail as it's all logged on the remote server and analyzed in different ways. On top of that, even if you do not use webmail, your email is still scanned for keywords by multiple sources from your ISP to various agencies. If you really want privacy, log off

i use the google plugin for firefox - disables ads for almost everything google, and switches the gmail to https instead of http. *feel a little better lol* i like gmail though - the interface is so simple to use - plus i can easily check it on my PSP when i'm on campus instead of needing a computer to view it cuz it scales down nicely
