windows media in ubuntu linux

ahhh, not linix...linux. phhht I was able to play .wma files in Mepis linux, but I cannot figure out how to play them in Ubuntu. Haven't tried it in Kubuntu yet. I've added the requisite repositories. The applicable file seems to be w32codecs, but it never shows up.

I'm also getting an error saying the music files must be local. I never had that problem in Mepis either.

Can anyone help? Please? I'm jonesing for some Nora Jones

I don't have much experience with Ubuntu. I use Xandros because it is the closest you can get to using Windows while using Linux.

wow, that's a great site Kona. Thanks. After much trial and travail, I think I can reliably play .wma files in kaffeine, but it's iffy atm.
