James Doohan, the chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures died early Wednesday. He was 85.
Perhaps those words "Beam me up, Scotty" will have even more meaning now. RIP James Doohan

A real class act. So sorry to hear of his passing. He had great passion for all this Star Trek.

i grew up with the original star trek in reruns, and scotty was one of the best...wont be the same without him

The immediate family are appealing for some of his ashes to be fired into space, [as with Gene Roddenbury's (sp) ] ...let's hope that becomes a reality.

What does NASA have to do with it? It's my understanding that it's being done by a private company who apparently specializes in these bizarre types of services.

Tarkus, I don't see it as wasteful. Some familys spend thousands on a casket that is just going to be buried six feet down and for the most part forgottn about (the casket itself that is). If it helps the family emotionally, why not? For a man who became a part of the lives of so many through the big screen and not to mention someone wounded at Normandy in WWII this would seem appropriate. To me anyway.

Tapper -- I agree, spending thousands of dollars on caskets is also wasteful. 
Mind you, it's their money, and I'm not telling them how to spend it. I just don't personally agree with it.
