SDC Suddenly Crashing on Launch

Tuesday, June 21, 2005 by Daiwa | Discussion: Object Desktop

I updated SDC this morning on a Win2K rig that had an existing SDC version which was relatively old (but still 2.x). After the mandatory reboot, SDC crashes on launch, triggers a Dr. Watson message and closes.

Strangely enough, I later launced SDC on my XP rig at work and got the nice MS error report message and SDC closed. I had updated SDC on the XP rig 1 or 2 days ago and had been running SDC without any problems until the first launch today.

I had another Win2K rig with an older version of SDC on it, so I decided I'd try updating that one to see if the same crash would occur. After reboot, SDC opens normally without crashing on that rig, but it defaults to the News section each time it's launched, despite having the "remember settings" option selected and closing it while in Object Desktop view.

I'm a bit stumped - now have 2 rigs on which SDC won't launch. Newsgroup server appears to be down, too - I was going to uninstall SDC, download the latest downloadable installer & let it update again, but can't for now.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Daiwa

Thanks for the info Boss, will try it when I get home.

(Didn't follow my own 'no' advice from another post - took a chance, rolled craps)
Ok, SDC just got upgraded to "c" version and all works ok now

Not for me! Smart setup does not work, with consequent failure to load Component Tray and DesktopX. I think I will reload a working configuration, prevent access to the internet until I can stop SDCentral updating itself. I like my Icon X and widgets and it is becoming a pain having to load them manually each time.

Installing the "c" version (the one currently available for download) over the top fixed things up here. At least so far.

Before you reconnect to the internet, you can go into Settings & have SDC prompt you before updating. I'm guessing you know that already, but just in case.

I just updated SDC on my WinXP Pro machine and now almost nothing works. If I try to lauch add/remove programs I get a rundll32.exe error. I booted in safe mode and was able to run the rollback described above but when I rebooted same problem. I am currently doing a custom uninstall because an automatic failed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make sure everything is removed?

Thanks in advance.

"C" version works for me. FYI I upgraded over the "default" 205 version available for download from https://www.stardock.com/products/sdcentral/ and the new version is working fine (so far)

I may have spoken too soon.

I read Riahon's post Link and decided to give it a try. Now I have the same problem Digital 2 won't download - fails - and when I try to delete it, it just re-queues.

Looks like the update to 2.09c.342 Build 94 managed to uncheck the *Enable MCP Smart Startup* item in SDC Settings. Just re-check it - everything's back to normal here after doing so.

And thanks SD for the prompt fix.

Daiwa-

Many thanks, but all necessary boxes are checked and I am at a loss to know what to do next, except repeat the last exercise of reloading a Ghost image and prevent SDC updating.

Joy of joys! An uninstall, a download of 2.05 Build 83 and an update to Build 94 eventually seems to have restored normallity.

The latest update fixes SDC. But is a fix for Desktop coming soon?

Hmmm... I just changed servers to California (just for the halibut) and it crashes. Changing back to Chicago server makes it work again!

2.09c.342 build 93

the update to 2.09c.342 Build 94

I don't get a notification to update to this build. Why? I have notifications of betas turned off - is it a beta?
