Internet Explorer problem...

ok, i got absolutly no idea what is going on with internet explorer, but one day it'll connect to the internet and i can sign on msn messenger. the next day it wont connect to the net and i cant get on msn. it also stops connecting halfway through on the net, without being provoked. ive looked on msn help and that sucked, and windows support was even worse.
even with all firewalls disabled it doesnt connect, and after various anti-virus and spyware scans, the search comes up blank and i still get the problem.
does anyone know what is going on and how i can solve it?

it might be your server... call them and tell them what is hapening.

Both my wife & mom have bee n having trouble with msn in the last month. Sometimes it can't connect, or it will connect but can't sign you in or you get in and then get disconnected after a short while.
if you're using dialup try updating and changing the connection numbers.
I have dialup but use ELink on my side and can sign into msgr if i want.

im adsl. the idea of calling the server is an idea, but its only come about recently (within the last month or 2), and ive had broadband since Feb. ill keep checking back on this post if anything else comes up

There is also the possiblity you got a bug that changed your IP address. If you can get online you can check to see what your Ip address is at http://www.whatismyip.com/
Check it against the one you are suppose to have, or call your company and ask if it is right. With DSL, I think you should always be able to get online. You might want to consider cable. It is much better and faster. I have never not been able to get online. Have you tried right clicking on the 2 monitors for your connection that should be in your taskbar? If it's not, go to control panel and click on Network and Internet connections, then network connections, right click on local area connection and hit repair. The Ip address is not the same as the one you see on the display in network connections. If that doesn't work, or your Ip has been changed, you will need to call your server and they will help you change your address back to what it should be. I forgot the proccess on how to do it, and it is a little involved, using run. Hope you get it straightened out.

it all seems fine now. whatever it was its gone away. been able to connect for a few days without it stopping me. i still got no idea what was causing the problem but it seems to have gone. my ip hasnt changed since i got DSL, so doubt it was that. anyway, its fixed now so im not complaining. thanks to everyone for their help

nope, spoke too soon. stopped working again. i see what you mean clwoods. the last number in my ip address has gone down by 2 to what it usually is (im only 15 so im not sure what the ip is meant to be). i can see it has changed because on my friends guestbook it can see what my ip was when i made a post there and whatsmyip.com says its different. i think im gonna hvae to learn more bout ip and proxy stuff before i can begin to sort this out.

I'm sorry. What kind of adware scan progs do you have? Have you downloaded anything off of ThemeXP in .exe format? There are alot of bugs that change your IP. It does not happen on it's own. An unless you chnaged it yourself, you have spyware somewhere. Let me know and I will try and help you get it straightened out.

check the microfilters I know it sounds stupid but they are cheaply made and 3 of mine have gone wrong preventing me from accessing the internet

you might want to try starting in safe mode and going to control panel>internet options>programs>manage addons. when there, look for browser addons that you don't recognise as being legit and disable them before restarting normally. if you have a browser hijacker thats changing your ip addy, this should fix it, hopefully. had a similar prob myself and this did the trick.

Clwoods - I had DSL 2 years ago and never had anything that monitors the connection in the taskbar. Whenever the connection went down I had to turn off the PC, unplug the modem, rest the modem, and then power the PC back on. I have to do the same things with my cable modem when I plug it into a different machine.

One important question is whether you have a static assigned IP or is it assigned by dhcp? If it's dhcp it's going to change and that isn't a problem. If it's a static IP and it changes that will prevent connection.
I'd recommend that you talk to your ISP and have them help determine exactly what's going on instead of potshot guessing.

I have always had 2 little monitors that are side by side that light up when there is activity online. Clicking them opens up a little box that tells you how many packets have been recieved and sent. Also your connection speed and how long you've been connected. If you right click it you have the option to repair your connection make or change settings ect.It can be enabled in your network settings in control panel. Just right click on your local connections and go to properties. You are talking about something different. I have to do the same thing you're talking about sometimes too, and would have gotten to that, but he hasn't come back except to say his address had changed ect. I was telling him what I told him so he could see if hitting repair would help, and to nip possible adware in the bud. I was trying to help him one step at a time. He is pretty young, and inexperienced in all of this.

im using microsoft anti-spyware and ad-aware pro for spyware scans. panda antivirus platinum for anti-virus scans, and all come up blank. i un-installed internet explorer some time ago but the problem still persists. i know you can never fully uninstall internet explorer so that sucks.
microfilters? if you mean the little white box thing, it cant be that. my brother and dad use the single modem to connect to the internet, and they dont have any problems with connecting using IE and logging onto msn.
clywoods - i dont conect through a LAN, i connect straight out to the net. by brother shares my internet connecting and he doesnt have any problems with IE, even when i am having problems.

i got firefox (how else would i post these messages + its so much better than IE), but i still need IE to be able to connect to the net to be able to sign on msn messenger. im planning on saving for a Mac soon so i wont have to worry bout IE and windows anymore.

if you're connecting to net with firefox, just use that.

i can go to msn and sign in and I can pull down start/all programs/msm messgr - i just have to 'sign in with a different account, click here' and then put my msn pw in.

if you're connecting to net with firefox, just use that.
