Change your Windows icons all at once!

Stardock has released IconPackager 3. IconPackager is a program that enables users to change nearly all of their Windows icons in one swoop by applying "packages" of icons. While Windows has long had the ability to change selected icons via "themes", until IconPackager came along, there was no way to change the hundreds of icons that exist throughout Microsoft Windows. For example, IconPackager can change the icons that represent different file types (.JPG, .DOC, .PSD), icons for individual programs, control panel icons, Start menu icons, and much more.
There are hundreds of icon packages available freely for download on websites such as WinCustomize.com, deviantART.com, SkinBase.org, and elsewhere.
IconPackager 3 adds support for a host of icons found in Windows XP / Windows XP SP2 and for the new icons in the file dialog. In addition, IconPackager 3 has made it much easier to create icon packages with the new "package builder" feature which enables icon designers to see a sheet of all the common icons found on Windows in a single page and the ability to change those icons with a simple drag and drop.
IconPackager is a free download. An enhanced registered version is also available on its own or as part of Stardock's Object Desktop suite of desktop enhancement utilities. The enhanced version allows users to change any icon on Windows (including programs) right from its properties dialog. Version 3 also has better integration with IconDeveloper, a program that makes it easy to create new icons.

The problems only worsened after upgrading to 3.09b[002]. Clicking on any package on the site would d/l it, but then IP would crash when trying to load it. If I d/l the *.ip file and then tried to install from within IP, I would get an error stating that "no icon package was found". Changing the extension to *.zip and opening with Winzip revealed the proper *.icl and *.iconpackage files.
To resolve the issue, I copied my Themes dir elsewhere, unintalled IP, rebooted and reinstalled ip 3.09[002]. I can now d/l from wincusto or install the IP packages from within the problem with no issues. The "Please Wait" dies just fine as well.
I did not have to copy the Themes dir back...all themes were not affected by the reinstall.
NOTE: Others mentioned the Blue Curve IP theme as causing some issues. Again, I do NOT have that one installed. Althought having it may have compounded the issues, I think that it's safe to say that MOST of Stardock's products CANNOT be upgraded from one major version to another. You may get away with RC1's or x.99 version, but not the major update.
Great products, Stardock. I love 'em. Perhaps you could make it a little clearer to users of at least Stardock Central that an uninstall should be performed before upgrading a new major release.

| Although I don't have Blue Curve installed, I was having issues after upgrading IP to v2.9x. Each time I would try to apply a package, the "Please Wait" splash would come up and then not go away. I was able to pull up the Task Manager and kill iconpackager.exe. It seemed that all of the icons were applied okay, but the program would sit at 50% CPU utilization and not die. |
I suggest you disable the splash screen in the settings. I've not had this hanging problem since doing so. I think the splash function might be doing more than just putting up a pretty picture on your screen.
Also, without the splash screen, it installs icons in the background instead of taking over your computer while it installs them.

Just to clarify, since uninstalling and installing IP, I am no longer having a problem with IP hanging on the splash after installing a package. It does go away after all icons are changed. Incidentally, before the 3.0 betas (2.x's), I didn't have the splash screen option checked. I think it was "forced" during one of the upgrades.

| After installing update to IconPackager, I had problems. They are as follows: 1)Microsoft Word stopped functioning; after starting program the intro screen appears and program hangs. Word would run in safe mode but would not open documents. 2)Norton AV would not allow me to run a scan. 3) desktop program icons for Office 2003 vanished from desktop. 4)Outlook could not use Word for the email editor.After uninstalling IconPackager, all problems mentioned were fixed.Why did this program cause these problems, and is anyone else having problems after installing updates. |
Well, it looks like i´ve the same problem. Msinfo32, Help and Support, NAV-scan don´t work anymore after installing IP 3. Problems remains after uninstalling, so i had to use a restorepoint. Isn´t there a possible way to download and older IP-version, so i could use that until the problems are solved in IP3?

After uninstalling IconPackager, all problems mentioned were fixed.
Why did this program cause these problems, and is anyone else having problems after installing updates.
