Bootskin causes BSOD
Do not use Random Option

For all those that have quite some Bootskins and use the Random Option in this application there is a very big chance that this can cause a BSOD at startup.
I've had the problem after installing some 10 or more additional bootskins, on top of some 15 that I already had.
It is only by chance that I came across this issue since I do no often reboot, but mostly use the sleep function.
Luckily I remembered that Bootskin could be the problem; and after some 15 BSOD's and several Restore Options that did not work to my surprise, I thought I'd disable the Bootskin app. while being in Safe mode.
Righthereafter I could login normally. I suspect the same could happen while having too much LogonScreens and also using the Random function.

You could just trie it, and you'll see. I think (as far as I presume since I'm not an expert) that while loading a "random" bootskin and in case there are too much to choose from Windows locks with the resulting BSOD. I think but I'm not sure I had it also once in the time I used the random option in the Logonscreen. app.
As for the different version > read that too, but it doesn't apply to me. I used some 15 bootskins in the Random function for ages; and it's only after adding something like 10 to 15 more that I got this issue. And lucky that I thought of disabling the app. otherwise I would have stuck with a new XP install.

maybe cut back on the number of random bootskins? :/

100 bootskins and 70 logons both set to random, computer rebooted at least twice a day, no BSOD ever.

Of course I cut back on the number of bootskins. I also use no randomisation anymore.
Thanks anyway for trying that out for me Cavan. Could be that my CPU is not high enough (1Ghz and 512Mb SDRam). I can guarantee you that I had 15 BSOD's and tried everything mentioned in my threadstarting post; and I nearly thought about reinstalling XP. I than just did one more thing: disactivating in safe mode the bootskinning option in the application. Immediately thereafter the PC started as usual. After that I disabled the randome option and now I change the bootskin manually from time to time.

but I've heard that some systems need a diffrent version of Bootskin: https://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/
