A vote will come up in your state on April 11 to try and pass a law making it legal to shoot feral, and ultimately domestic cat's. Here is a link to the proposed bill Link

And here is a link that show's county by county where you can go for the meeting on the matter.

*UPDATE*
Here is a copy of the alert I received. It explains this a little better.
Dear Best Friends Network Member,

Many of you may have heard of the Wisconsin man who wants to create a hunting season on feral cats in his state. It has received nationwide attention. In case you haven’t heard of this, here is just one of the recent articles: http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=31029&ntpid=3

Because so many of you have asked, we wanted to let you know what is happening and what is being done to help protect Wisconsin cats:

On Monday, April 11th at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Congress Question #62 will be up for vote. Question #62 would define feral cats as an unprotected species, as if that's not bad enough, a feral cat is considered any cat without a collar and not under the control of the "owner". This means that it will be legal to hunt cats with no season or bag limit. To see the entire question:

http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/congress/sh/cca/index.htm

There is a statewide campaign to defeat Question #62, led by a local coalition of animal groups and concerned individuals called Wisconsin Cat Action Team. They are organizing people to attend the hearings and voice their opinion.

What exactly can you do to help?

Right now the Cat Action Team feels that letters, emails, and phone calls from out of state will not help. If the vote passes, laws would have to be changed and the proposal would go before the legislature. At that time letters and petitions will be appropriate and we will keep you updated.

The key right now is getting the word out to Wisconsin residents to attend the hearings on April 11th and vote! If you have friends or family in Wisconsin, please urge them to attend the hearings and to spread the word to their friends. The more people we can let know, the better! For locations in each county for the meeting on the 11th go to http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/congress/sh/lo/index.htm. The Cat Action Team is also looking for people to be County Coordinators in each county to help get the word out.

A website has been set up with more details and will continually be updated: Don’t Shoot the Cat (www.dontshootthecat.com). Also, a Don’t Shoot the Cat fact sheet is attached with more information. Please feel free to contact [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for being a part of the Network and for all that you do!

Sincerely,

Deborah Delgado-Hand

4/13 UPDATE****
Dear Best Friends Network Member,

You may have heard about the proposal in Wisconsin that would allow it to be legal to shoot free roaming cats.

In Wisconsin, any individual is able to propose questions to those who attend the annual Conservation Congress hearings. Wisconsin resident Mark Smith proposed that free roaming cats be removed from the protected species list, which would make it legal to shoot them. This issue was discussed at the meetings in each county on Monday night. This is NOT yet a law that will be going into effect.

Even though there were more yes votes than no votes at the meetings on Monday, they was just a small percentage of Wisconsin residents and in by no means a representation of the views of the entire state. The results of the Spring Hearings are forwarded to the Natural Resources Board and Department of Natural Resources for further consideration following the statewide recommendations from the Conservation Congress at its annual meeting. The State Legislature would then need to pass legislation to implement this proposal. And then the Legislature would ultimately decide this issue.

When we, as well as many of you, contacted officials in Wisconsin about this situation, they responded with a resounding “no” when asked if such a law would be passed in their state.

Jim Holperin, Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Tourism responded saying “No bill or any other proposal to allow shooting of cats, wild

(feral) or domestic has ever been advanced in Wisconsin, nor will one be. No legislator would be foolhardy enough to author such a measure. Cats are safe here. Regardless of the Conservation Congress outcome, however, that vote is only advisory. It does not have the force of law.”

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary assures it won't be open season on stray cats in the state. Secretary Scott Hassett says that will be the case regardless of how residents voted on such a proposal. Hassett says there are too many unanswered questions and problems associated with killing roaming cats.

For background information on this situation please visit Alley Cat Allies at http://www.alleycat.org/wi.html

Make sure to visit www.dontshootthecat.com to keep up-to-date on this issue.

We are keeping a close eye on this situation and will keep you informed of the latest updates and how action can be taken if needed.

Sincerely,

Deborah Delgado-Hand

Sheesh, give it a rest..I can tell you where I think you should put them..
I bet your one of these people that make fun of people with speech impettiments as well?

If you want to avoid something that was said, start picking apart the persons typing errors, or who knows, perhaps the person really doesnt know..but who cares, I can understand the words even if they arent perfectly spelled, arranged, presented,,Why cant you?

I would go as far to say you have a bit of an obsession going on here as well..this is carried over from another thread!

Gimmie a break,

Thanks Double Zero. Don't let it bother you. I wanted to see what kind of idiot would write such a thing so I looked up his name and found him at JU. He is an athiest who claims to hate God. Need I say more? I imagine being able to punctuate correctly is his only claim to fame. I may not punctuate the right way, but at least I have a heart and soul. I feel like you are a big brother watching out for me. Thanks

Not a problem clwoods, not really "watching out for you" I just could *Not believe he carried it to that extreme..if he wanted to address it he should have done so back in the thread where it originated...
I had a problem with that..LoL

Anyway, I am feeling much better now..LoL

Shoot cats? A law? If wisconsin is so worried about feral cats they should make it free to get pets spayed or neutered. And to shoot domesticated cats is rediculous they are someones pet. I'm glad I dont live in Wisconsin I have 3 cats and they are barn cats, lived outside all their lives , keep mice away from the feed and out of the house.

You're right goober. The thing is, if this passes in Wisconsin it will just be a matter of time until other states follow. It is another example of people not wanting to bring help and a merciful solution to a problem they created in the first place. I am a member of the ASPCA and Humane Society of America. This is but one horrible story in a long line of horrible stories. Instead of fixing the problem they just want to kill it. My heart breaks every day for the animals all over the world, and indeed for the ignorant and cruel people who think it's cool to kill animals at will. I can not (and don't want to) imagine what kind of souless mindset could do these things.Anyway, Thanks for reading this goober my buddy. Even though you don't live in Wisconsin, you can sign the petition against it through the link I provided.

Its a shame people can be so cruel! I think if someone shot one of my cats and I found out about it( I not a violent person) but we'd be fighting! I'm an animal lover and I think its our responsibilty to care for them!

I guess the petition against this is no longer there since the link to it is broken. I can't believe someone actually wants to make it a law to shoot cats, how pathetic the human race is.

I have euthenized many animals. It is not pleasant but overpopulation is a problem for a species also. In areas where raccoons or skunks have no natural predators and their numbers increase to overpopulation, diseases naturally set in to reduce the lot. Parvovirus, Rabies, Tulermia ....

As gooberbean alluded to, we need to be managers of this world and that means wildlife also(and feral cats ARE wild). Many DNRs have very good strategies to keep wildlife numbers at a healthy level, but putting out the approval for a bunch of yahoos to be plinking critters at will is one of the dimmest ideas I have ever heard. There are going to be injured critters, people hurt, neighbor's dogs, cats, and maybe kids shot by accident. This is just silly.

You want to keep feral cats and other "nuisance" wildlife problems down? Bring back the larger predators. Where there are coyotes, the goose population is healthy. Where there are bobcats, Opossums are not under everybody's front stoop.

This use to be my profession and I have literally lived with my client base.

Shooting cats?

Well, that's convoluted thinking at its best!! Feral cats are often found in very populated areas and if this passes it won't be long before some moron will wind up accidentally shooting someone. Don't get me wrong...... I love target shooting but I won't kill an animal.

If it's such a problem have they tried free spaying and neutering? Many cities have something like that and have had good results.

I agree with you , Bill. But, I think we ought to deal with the problem and not the symptoms of the problem. Man has been doing that for eons. It does not work. The problem itself needs to be addressed. But, the balance has gone so far out of wack by mans crazy interference and extinction of animals, that I don't really know where we begin.

clwoods, Maybe I'm missing something...... but most feral cats tend to stay in populated areas due to access to food, etc.. I can't imagine the hunting areas being overrun with feral cats....... the thinking here seems a little off, to me.

At any rate I'm against it.... but then I would be against shooting any animal.

I'm against it. Bring large predators back and harmony returns. Just keep an eye on your small dogs.
