A vote will come up in your state on April 11 to try and pass a law making it legal to shoot feral, and ultimately domestic cat's. Here is a link to the proposed bill Link

And here is a link that show's county by county where you can go for the meeting on the matter.

*UPDATE*
Here is a copy of the alert I received. It explains this a little better.
Dear Best Friends Network Member,

Many of you may have heard of the Wisconsin man who wants to create a hunting season on feral cats in his state. It has received nationwide attention. In case you haven’t heard of this, here is just one of the recent articles: http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=31029&ntpid=3

Because so many of you have asked, we wanted to let you know what is happening and what is being done to help protect Wisconsin cats:

On Monday, April 11th at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Congress Question #62 will be up for vote. Question #62 would define feral cats as an unprotected species, as if that's not bad enough, a feral cat is considered any cat without a collar and not under the control of the "owner". This means that it will be legal to hunt cats with no season or bag limit. To see the entire question:

http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/congress/sh/cca/index.htm

There is a statewide campaign to defeat Question #62, led by a local coalition of animal groups and concerned individuals called Wisconsin Cat Action Team. They are organizing people to attend the hearings and voice their opinion.

What exactly can you do to help?

Right now the Cat Action Team feels that letters, emails, and phone calls from out of state will not help. If the vote passes, laws would have to be changed and the proposal would go before the legislature. At that time letters and petitions will be appropriate and we will keep you updated.

The key right now is getting the word out to Wisconsin residents to attend the hearings on April 11th and vote! If you have friends or family in Wisconsin, please urge them to attend the hearings and to spread the word to their friends. The more people we can let know, the better! For locations in each county for the meeting on the 11th go to http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/congress/sh/lo/index.htm. The Cat Action Team is also looking for people to be County Coordinators in each county to help get the word out.

A website has been set up with more details and will continually be updated: Don’t Shoot the Cat (www.dontshootthecat.com). Also, a Don’t Shoot the Cat fact sheet is attached with more information. Please feel free to contact [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for being a part of the Network and for all that you do!

Sincerely,

Deborah Delgado-Hand

4/13 UPDATE****
Dear Best Friends Network Member,

You may have heard about the proposal in Wisconsin that would allow it to be legal to shoot free roaming cats.

In Wisconsin, any individual is able to propose questions to those who attend the annual Conservation Congress hearings. Wisconsin resident Mark Smith proposed that free roaming cats be removed from the protected species list, which would make it legal to shoot them. This issue was discussed at the meetings in each county on Monday night. This is NOT yet a law that will be going into effect.

Even though there were more yes votes than no votes at the meetings on Monday, they was just a small percentage of Wisconsin residents and in by no means a representation of the views of the entire state. The results of the Spring Hearings are forwarded to the Natural Resources Board and Department of Natural Resources for further consideration following the statewide recommendations from the Conservation Congress at its annual meeting. The State Legislature would then need to pass legislation to implement this proposal. And then the Legislature would ultimately decide this issue.

When we, as well as many of you, contacted officials in Wisconsin about this situation, they responded with a resounding “no” when asked if such a law would be passed in their state.

Jim Holperin, Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Tourism responded saying “No bill or any other proposal to allow shooting of cats, wild

(feral) or domestic has ever been advanced in Wisconsin, nor will one be. No legislator would be foolhardy enough to author such a measure. Cats are safe here. Regardless of the Conservation Congress outcome, however, that vote is only advisory. It does not have the force of law.”

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary assures it won't be open season on stray cats in the state. Secretary Scott Hassett says that will be the case regardless of how residents voted on such a proposal. Hassett says there are too many unanswered questions and problems associated with killing roaming cats.

For background information on this situation please visit Alley Cat Allies at http://www.alleycat.org/wi.html

Make sure to visit www.dontshootthecat.com to keep up-to-date on this issue.

We are keeping a close eye on this situation and will keep you informed of the latest updates and how action can be taken if needed.

Sincerely,

Deborah Delgado-Hand

I have euthenized many animals. It is not pleasant but overpopulation is a problem for a species also. In areas where raccoons or skunks have no natural predators and their numbers increase to overpopulation, diseases naturally set in to reduce the lot. Parvovirus, Rabies, Tulermia ....

Lady Aarielle, SD makes a good point, and I will add to it.

Fish and Game regulates heards of Elk, dear, fish etc,,etc by issuing permits to hunters based on the size of the herds and possible winter to come..
If a herd is to large and a winter is harsh there wont be enough food to support the herd and more animals would bee lost due to starvation than necessary.. Hunters and Fish and game actually work hand in hand in maintaining these animals, a few are hunted for the good of the whole. People eat, animals survive that may not have survived the winter..

There is a bigger picture to hunting than is upon the surface, I just wanted to point that out.

I am in no way aggreeing with the sensless killing of cats for no other reason than an unwillingness to seek a better solution..
But as far as the hunting goes...LoL
it is necessary actually..

Zero.

the thinking here seems a little off, to me

I believe they are saying that the cats are doing the hunting. Killing birds ect. I am not sure. I do know one thing though. These people need to get a life. They need to help life instead of take it away. It will be interesting to see what happens. Since there has been a good response to this, I will update as things happen. You can sign the petition against it even if you don't live in Wisconsin. In case the link is broke the address is www.dontshootthecat.com. Thanks for you interest and comment.

The simple solution is to have your pets spayed and neutered that way there would be no overpopulation of cats and people wouldnt be disposing of unwanted kittens hence the feral cat problem. And the feral cat problem isnt only in the city ,its in the country too! We live in a disposible society once some people are tired or through with something its tossed away!

Well Webgizmos, I got a Yahoo page. Maybe the petition has reached it's goal, and is closed now. I really appreciate your effort. Thanks so much. I will keep this thread updated since there has been such a good response.

That is exactly right. Prevention is the cure. Thanks goober.

As gooberbean alluded to, we need to be managers of this world and that means wildlife

Absolutely Bill. I appreciate all your comments and input. The well being of animals is very important to me, and the response here tonight has made me feel very good. Thanks!

Zero-
The efficacy of nature in controlling overpopulation in species has always amazed me. I understand that hunters now provide the service that higher echelon natural predators once provided until they were hunted to the brink of extinction such as grizzlies, etc..

However, this problem with domestic cats that are now feral is again, the aftermath of irresponsible people and I think that perhaps a better solution can be found. These, after all, are not game animals. How will a hunter differentiate between a feral or a pet. Many people in urban areas have mouser cats ? Also, it is my understanding that most feral cats remain in the cities.

A blanket free for all on these cats seems an extreme solution. This carte blanche killing of feral cats is bound to appeal to those who are not hunters and with a penchant for mischief.

I hope other avenues will be explored. This just seems cruel.

I agree with gooberbean.... the solution is in spaying and neutring.

::nods::I also agree with both of you..::laughs:: I just threw the hunter stuff in there because you made the comment of not shooting a single animal. While I am sure you would not, if you said you would not..I just wanted to point out it does happen for reasons other than sport or food...
I personally love venison, rabbit, quail, pheasant..etc..etc..not to mention that there isnt much that swims in the sea that I wont eat..raw..LoL!..well not all of it raw..but most.
As a hunter/fisherman I also am concerned about preserving the animals, and have learned the reason why there are limits, seasons and even gender based licences. Even if I do not hunt or fish within a year I do purchase my licences to support F&G in their efforts to maintain and preserve them.

As for the cats...Hopefully that will get worked out, I have a feeling it will.

I do hope they will find a better solution.

If you consume what you eat I have no arguments there. I just can't understand people who kill with no other purpose in mind than to kill and move on the next target.

I actually love guns and target shooting but I could never bring myself to kill an animal unless my life was in peril.

I'm just one of those strange people who sees "Bambi" in every animal.

My question is...who manages the over population of people...I hate to say it but someone needs to cull the herd in regards to human population. I see people doing far more damage to the world than all the animals combined.

Leave that to Bush and the wars he wages..thats sure to get rid of a few, but anything other than that would be plagues, flu epidemics and natural disasters..

Anyway, if anyone wants to have some simple fun..LoL..and I od mean simple.. Try to get the drunk German?? home..high score is 86 meters I guess..LoL..its a flash based game..german I think..
Give it a try.. Link Gotta be better than the morbidness of this thread!!

Yep, I believe they're the ones that caused this little fiasco with ferals.

any abuse to an inocent creature is unwaranted and deemed criminal in my book...i agree with population control.. but heck theres better ways ..spaying, neutering..etc...but just to "open season" is kinda lame... this reminds me of the seal clubbing thread that was posted a few years ago.. totally insane abuse .. it was even deemed a sport and licences were being sold....if this is allowed .. it will only be a matter of time til someone tries to claim it's a sport and set up ticket booths ...just plain sad that the blood lust in the world is so far out of hand ...

As humans reproduce and reproduce and reproduce, open wiildlife land becomes more scarce. We push wildlife right into our backyards more and more every day. When that happens , the wildlife becomes a nuisance?
It honestly makes more sense to have an open season on humans. We are the cancer, not the kitties.

Around here, people pay all sorts of money to live on an estate that is partially wild, and then complain that the deer are eating their flowers, which I think is hilarious. Funniest thing I ever saw was going to someone's house who was having problems with beavers. He bought a 10 acre lot of land that had a river run through the corner, built a nice house and a small pond surrounded by ornamental trees. When I got there the pond was surrounded with ornamental stumps; perfectctly spaced and about 18" high. It was very hard to not laugh in front of the customer. Go Beavers!
