Unbelievable use of the gradient mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator

Thursday, February 24, 2005 by paxx | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

The site is in Chinese, but the images speak for themselves.
This just totaly blows my mind.

As I don,t have Corel Draw but Adobe Illustrator, I was Googling around to find information on the use of the gradient mesh in Illustrator, and I fell upon this... Just go ahead and check it out. These are NOT pictures, but 100% vector work using the gradient mesh tool. Ooouch!

Takes a few seconds to show up on my connection, but it's worth the wait. Be patient, it's worth it.

If I read it correctly, it talks about Photoshop not Illustrator. Even though Illustrator would show the grid lines and be in vector. Hmm

Wow....that was amazing. They looked so real!! I wouldn't have known the difference if you hadn't mentioned that it was all made through photoshop.

No no, it's not Photoshop but Illustrator. The shots showing the layers palette is Illustrator, plus these are gradient meshs you see in black and white and Photoshop doesn't have them. I don't understand chineese either so I don't know why he's posting these in what seems to be a Photoshop forum, but I assume that forum also accepts Illustrator works, especially amazing ones like these.

OK, got some translations going here. The title is: * Japan's AI practical work * (AI = Adobe Illustrator)
And some of the drawings in the middle of the page, actually says "Drawing by Adobe Illustrator".

I think it's all real. I've been playing a bit with the mesh tool in Illustrator, and I can see how the lines could translate to the results shown. But if you look at the really really realistic ones (the dog, the lettuce, the car) just look at the number of mesh lines there are. You must understnd that each line intersection represents a different color, making a gradient between the color of that point and the color of the next point. Some of these have more lines than actual fill area. Must have taken forever (I can see months) to make some of these.
