America Online is expected to launch an Internet phone service in the United States next month, leapfrogging rivals in a fast-growing market as it seeks to evolve from an also-ran provider of dial-up Internet access to a broadband services powerhouse.
Like Yahoo and Microsoft, AOL already offers voice chat on PCs as a free feature of its instant messaging services. AOL's new phone service, by contrast, will take a different path, charging customers a monthly fee to make calls over the Internet using an ordinary handset and a small analog-to-digital telephone adapter.

I've had my entire household wired on VOIP for over a year. $14.99 a month, almost my entire state is my local calling area, and a featurelist that blows anything else away.

I have to say its flawless and transparent. Nobody even knows we are on VOIP, its never dropped calls, and we are 100% satisfied. I was paying $50-70 a month to SBC before I got fed up and went with Voip. I find it funny that all of these companies are starting to offer it like its some "New thing", when many of us have been doing it for quite some time and saving big money.
Keep in mind, this is wired into my entire phone system completely independant of my computers, not even hooked to my PC's!

Anyway, VOIP is the next thing and is changing the telecommunication field. I know this might be wrong, but I feel the same way about BitTorrent changing how movies are rented and distributed.
My mom was thinking about VOIP, but she is not sure yet. We have verizon.

I can't believe the feature list. Voice quality is equal to POTS so far.

voip solution. But for the rest of us who prefer to have
a regular phone and voip solution separated for security
reasons skype is a nice tool.
Ane anyone with a pc, headset and internet access can use
it to talk to people over the net, all over the world.
The best thing is you don't even need to have broadband
to use skype
