Irregular type shapes?

I've done a few things with irregular type shapes but just with the selection tool on subtract from selection, and I was just wondering if there is some other way to go about it. I mean like on pixel pirates wOrst widgets ever https://www.wincustomize.com/Skins.aspx?LibID=34. If there is please let me know. I might figure it out but if somebody would give me a clue it would sure help..
