Corel Draw question

Monday, February 14, 2005 by 47songs | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I'm working on my first wallpaper, well, that I really care about. I'm a little confused about what size to start with while making the wall and what size to export it as. Shoud I start with a smaller size to build and then export as 1024 and 1280, or start with bigger sizes and export down? I hope this question makes sense.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would start and finish at the size YOU wish to use it at. Then export it at the other generally used sizes. Having said that it's almost always better to reduce a large (say 1600x1200) picture than to blow up a small one.

Thanks. D Lantec. That's just what I wanted to know. At present I am working on an odd sized canvas just putting together ideas, but wish to start on a serious canvas soon.

I am making this wall on my laptop which is a 1280x800 pixels, but I want to export it with a few different sizes, mostly bigger. I just want to make sure I have the best quality when it's exported at every size.

Edit: I suppose I shouldn't have titled this Corel Draw question because it's really just a general skinning quesiton.

Hi Donna Im not an expert like some but I think you can resize down or up depending on the contrast could get too grainy that would be your determing factor other wise pretty easy and i guess that would be depending on your program I have a couple programs and its easy.

so rock on rockin G-maww

47songs,
My Vaio is 1280 x 800 so you go with what you need and then I'll finally have a wall that's right for me too.

47 songs... I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but the size that you create in Corel doesn't really matter... it's all vector graphics. You could take the same corel file and export to many different sizes and it would make no difference in quality. Just make sure your work is the proper dimensions, then export multiple times to diffent sizes if you want...

Yes, D Lantec, you will!

RPGuere, that does make sense about the vector graphics, I hadn't thought of that. However, a few objects on the wall needed to be changed to bitmap to get the effects I wanted. Will those individual objects export as vector also?

Thanks everyone!

A few things to keep in mind when creating Wallpapers in CorelDRAW.

1) All Drop Shadows or Glows, are created at the DPI of your screen.

2) Any bitmaps you make as part of the image will have there own DPI.

3) Any Bitmap effects will have there own DPI, this included Fractals and Transparency Masks using bitmaps and fractals.

You will have to play with it to see the what I mean, but I find that I get the best results for wallpapers if I fallow the same guidelines I use for exporting Icons.

1) Set up you page to be 300dpi.
2) Design the wall at 1" = 100 pixels. Example most the time I do walls at 12.80" x 10.24".

3) Export the Image as a Transparent PNG, at 300dpi. Then Resample it down with some other graphics program.

I have a exporting Video over in the CorelDRAW for skinners tutorials, you might want to check it out.

PERFECT!! Thanks Paul!! That answers all my questions!!! I had seen your video on exporting and used what I learned from it to export my icons, but I didn't know what numbers to use for the walls. Again, thank you very much!!
