bootskin question

Monday, January 17, 2005 by Mega-Hurtz | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

i heard that bootskins can only be 640x480 is this true? i wanted to make a bootskin and i was going to make one that was 1600x1200, so i would like to know before i get started. i noticed most of the bootskin samples are pretty small so i'm guessing there might be some truth to this.

yes, 640x480 is the only format supported, anything bigger will not work.

That doesn't matter.. Windows sets the screen res to 640x480 (VGA 16 colour) during booting regardless of the graphics hardware.

it does matter for LCD screens because 1600x1200 is the physical resolution unlike CRT monitors for desktops which can display all different kinds of resolutions. LCD screens take whatever resolution you put it on and upgrade/downgrade to match the physical screen resolution.

What I meant is that at boot-time, Windows displays the bitmap at 640x480 regardless of your physical screen res (and regardless if it's LCD or CRT). It's the lowest common format that's guaranteed to display on virtually any graphics card/monitor (apart from Hercules, CGA and EGA standards).

Depending on the LCD it may be that the bootscreen does not use up the whole LCD area or it may stretch the bitmap to fit the full res. You're in the same boat as anyone who has a big hi-res CRT because the image is effectively "stretched" to fit the whole screen area in that case also.

At this stage there's not a lot that can be done about it.
