So, does anyone think the new Mac will be a turning point?

I didn't think so when I first read about it. Nobody is going to 'switch' because of all the programs on Windows that also work AT work and with other peoples home computers.
Not to mention that there is no monitor, keyboard or mouse. CNET News.com compared the machines to PC's and you can get a Pentium 4 with everything you would need.
So why do I think now the Mini MAC will be revolutionary?
Mostly because of what you can do with it for the price. Media center, iPod native connection, mobility (just take the box as long as you know where your going has a mouse/keyboard/monitor then your fine), you can network it with your other PC's and has all those cool programs for making digital stuff.
All of a sudden, its not a replacement, its a add-on. A very important add on. I think its one that will bring on a new wave a media in the home.
While I do not know if people will 'switch', I do think the TV/Cable networks are going to have to change their business concepts. Now people will truely have a media center with the PC and the Mini MAC.
Funny... wasn't Microsoft suppossed to do that with media center?

I think it will probably entice more new home users. Certainly won't be a huge revolutionary record sales breaking computer, but it will have some success, the same way the iMac did when Apple released the transparent coloured aquarium. It's not powerful enough for heavy computer users such as us, but for the average home user it's certainly more than enough. As you said, few will switch because of the cost of repurchasing every single software, and I don't think too many people will buy it as a second computer either - other than maybe people that are curious and have an extra $500 burning their pocket. I mean, I'm curious, but not enough to dish out that kid of money.
But with the iLife range of software included, the average home user has most of everything he needs for his home use (pictures, home videos, music, email, browser...).
Wait, I say the new user, but then again, a new user doesn't have a screen, keyboard and mouse already, so he'd have to purchase these too, so add another 400 and you're pretty close to a good startup PC. But I think new home owners tend to favour Mac computers, so for the same price they may get this Mac instead of a PC.

Let's not kid ourselves. As someone wisely put it "Steve Jobs could deficate in an off white plastic case, add two buttons and an lcd screen, and you would pay six hundred dollars for it." 
But seriously, the Mac Mini is just a hyped-up lan computer. They have been around for ages, and Apple won't change that. This isn't another iPod situation that sparks some kind of revolution, its just another Apple product meant to usurp the already PC populous.

The more I think about it, the more I feel that this could take on a new look for TV and media in the household.
Whether that is good for Apple remains to be seen.
The Mac Mini seems more of an addition to what you have than a switch. The link speaks to making the Mini a media center by linking TV's, recording/playing music and capturing video. Once you put it on the house network and hook it up to your PC, now you have more.
HDTV ready??? Yes. TiVo power? Almost... Portability? Yes. (as long as where your going has a mouse/monitor/keyboard)
Well, lets see what Apple does with this. I have a feeling that they will mess it up and push 'switch' instead of 'get more'. Lets face it, if IBM is getting out of the PC business, maybe its time to have other focii then switching? The indrustry is getting smaller and margins slimmer. Software, perifrials and specific hardware is where to go. The Mac Mini should be marketed as a appliance rather than a computer.
As for switching... some will. The Mac interface is really good, the UI is worked out and the apps that they DO have are pretty nice.
Too bad Microsoft will never put its software on the MAC in any real form... unless it gets split up into the OS business and the software business...

It could start a "new" interest for macs in some people. I am certainly interesting in getting one to add to my current pc.

I think Jafo has it right... and the Mac Mini will be a very good seller to those who think nothing of plopping down $300-500 for an iPod itself (all 10 million of them).

A friend of mine continues to remind me of the stability of macs over pcs. So for that reason I would consider adding to my computer collection.

I can't see a G4 or G5 user picking up one of these underpowered little guys. Not gonna happen. And this version is not anywhere close to a media center. Uh-uh.
And PC users? What PC user is going to by an Apple with a new OS to learn to run less apps? It's not like Macs can do things PCs can't anymore.
Maybe I might get one for my sainted grandmother because it's so easy to use . . if I knew OSX. Having partly switched (I have a Power MAc G4 on a switch box that I almost never use, I use my dual boot BeOS more often - but I digress) it's not easier to learn or use. Just different. I'd get granny a PC because that's what EVERYONE uses around her.

It's small, it's trendy, it's appeal will be short-lived.

I think it'll entice more people to 'look' at Macs......a bit like the 'foot in the door'.
An adjunct to their existing PC.....but maybe whetting their apetite for 'more'....
