ObjectBar 2 Beta arrives on ODNT..

Worth the wait?

Tuesday, December 21, 2004 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

At long last the ObjectBar 2 beta has arrived.  ObjectBar 2 will replace both ObjectBar and ControlCenter as it will be a superset of both programs.

The beta is still very early in its overall development but contains 3 key features:

The three big features in this beta are:

  1. New virtual desktop manager. It's VERY early please keep in mind we'll be adding a lot of new features to this.
  2. All new cleaned up user interface designed to make it much easier to work with bars and such.
  3. Widget support.  You can embedd DesktopX widgets into your ObjectBar. This is incredibly cool. However, this feature is not designed so that end users will start stuffing widgets into their bars arbitrarily but rather for ObjectBar theme creators to be able to have a lot more flexibility. In other words, it is not being designed so that you can just go out and grab any old widget and throw it in there. The widget should be designed with being put into ObjectBar (so while you can put swimming fish into your bar, it's not designed for that and it'll do weird things no doubt).

You have to have Object Desktop to get this beta. If you don't have Object Desktop you can get it at www.objectdesktop.com.

AthleticTrainer1981. It sure can; you just have to set it to dock to the edge of the screen.

Great job on this one Stardock. It is SO much easier to use. Can't wait to make some themes for it!

I just noticed it at the SDC. I'm going to have a play with it now. I'm very excited! Will we be able to create language files for it?

hm... Question: How do I move bars around? I started a new theme, created a new vertical bar. But I don't seem to be able to move it to the right side. Nor can I find an option in the preferences. How can do you do it?

Btw, the text on the bar appears really small. I'm having the bar to use WindowBlinds skin. The WB skin I'm using got nowhere as small text as what OD is displaying.

Check the history log of OD. There was a recent addition that said OD was temporarly XP due to some problems with 2000 and dlls.

I wasthrilled to see OB updated, finally. I love this program. I've been trying out the new beta, and it looks great. But, where do I report bugs, as I have found a few? I guess I'll just list them here for now:

1. Seems to displace my wallpaper, shifting some sections of pixels out of the way. I'll post a screen shot in a few minutes to show what I mean.

2. It knocked my DX theme, gef's blue tabs right into the middle of the screen, and I hat to unload DX. I haven't reloaded it yet.

3. I'm still playing, but I haven't figured out how to change the title of the popup menu. I can add shortcuts just fine, but cannot change the popup title.

4. It's slooooow to open new windows, like the theme browser. That just may be my computer, but it sucks.

Other than these, I'm in love.

Right now it's a bit early to worry about reporting bugs. We've got a long list of them and we'll be putting out a bunch of updates after the holidays. We just wanted to get something out before we left for vacations.

Is this new app also going to be the right-click built in to it, or is right-click going to be it's own app? and is there an expected time for a demo release?

Will the new Object Bar be able to use old Obejcet Bar designs?
