Ridiculous Gas Prices Revisited

Back in May there was a little thread https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WC&id=277174 about gas prices, politics and the like. At the time I personally was paying close to $2 a gallon for gas when I made this prediction:
Today I paid $1.69 a gallon for gas
Prices here are running between $1.69-$1.81 right now. Well I wasn't right about a "glut", but I nailed the price. What I had figured was in order for the American public to be comfortable with an increase in the cost of gas, there had to be an "over-increase" (kind of like raising the price of something before it's put on sale) so that the actual increase would be less painful.

Oz prices are at least double that of the US....but the country is the same size....mileages are the same...so we suffer...

The people in the US musn't complain too much about the gas-price.
Come to The Netherlands.

The major comtributing factor to fluctuations, as least in the US, is due to the fact that oil is traded as a commodity in the futures market. What does that mean? It means that the prices are determined not by actual oil production, oil usage, or even how much oil is being held in reserve, but rather what someone THINKS is going to happen in the oil market. So whenever there's any kind of strife, or threat of production shortfalls, or any other influencing factor, we see the price change based on the opinions of investors. The price of oil, per barrel was recently alomost $50 US, yet the price at the pump was less than it was a few months ago when oil was under $40 US per barrel simply because there is a little more in reserve now than then. I know this probably doesn't apply much to those in other parts of the world, and yes I know that most other parts of the world would love to pay as little as we do in the US for a gallon [ or liter ] of gasoline. By all reports we are nearing the halfway point, where we will have used over half of the oil reserves in the world, probably sometime in the next 10-20 years, depending on the accuracy of estimates of proven oil reserves.

I totally believe the 'lets jack the price of gasoline really high so that when we lower it to a merely rediculously high price,they will thank us' scenario,is TRUE.

Makes you want to give up? 20 years from now no oil? I bet it will really be 40, but even then we should be using way more natural power. The prices of wind, solar and battery power should have come down due to mass production and the need for a better power resource.
To think when my kid is my age (if I had a kid) she would be used to going to the battery refuel station down the block.
