Check my new webdesign

Friday, August 13, 2004 by Styl-X Design | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I would like a honest opinion about my new webdesign. Don't comment on spelling, I know, will be fixed in 2 day when it goes 'official'.

Thanks. Also, if you see any flaws in code/design, let me know.

Ok first off al, I said it would be changed, I mean, there are 4 visitors who came from this forum... big deal.
And its easy to change not China? Let me tell you, THAT is bullshite. My images are hosted now, it is hosted in a map with the name skyndicate. some of those images are named skyndicate and have an image with the name on it.
Replacing the word skindicate in all my htm files just ins't an option. first I have to replace all the images, rename the map etc etc. This isn't something that can be done in 5 minutes and I just putted everything up, it was 1 am and I wanted to get some sleep. but relax, I am working on it.

Thanks macrobaye, I am working on getting the previews from the companies at the moment and some skins are still in development.

In all honesty, my first thought when I saw the site was that it looked like a washed out version of The Skins Factory's site.

#59 by Sir macrobaye - 8/21/2004 12:47:20 AM GOD who the hell cares about the name? Ok, he borrowed the name from somewhere else, but you're acting as if this sort of thing has never been done before. This happens ALL the time, and sometimes when it happens, people get upset, BUT this isn't some multi-million dollar trademark and it isn't being handled my a multi-million dollar company. It's a small "company" which hasn't had any real work yet, who borrowed a name from, what? A skinning TEAM? A skinning HANDLE? A skinning SUITE? whatever it is, is it really that big of a deal.

Have to admit that is true. Its wasn't a company, it was a nickname for a skin suite. I still wouldn't use it because of some of the reactions here, but to each his own.

I don't know how many times I have come up with a name that has been taken, but then just to come up with a name (or forced to come up with a name) that is better. For example someone at deviant art has the name anifanatic. So I am using the handle thoseanifanatics... and I actually like it better.

Oh yeah... I was going to say that but... those buttons look familiar.

Anyway, back to work. To each his own... again I say!

I noticed that too....

It still looks good, but perhaps a change is in order for that as well.

Oh yeah, I see it now, that 'Home' text looks just the same at the skinsfactory and at my site... wow, stunning!

And again very shocking: we both have white as background!

only the skinsfactory uses a bar to navigate, have their page over their full screen (and I have mine in a box)

this is insane guys c'mon, give it a break.

but for seriouse, maybe both sites looks a bit the same due to the same use of color (white) and are both not very graphic intense. Only I use brown and thy use black.

Why my site is so basic (maybe TSF's site is basic too...?) is because I don't offer webdesign as a main part of my business. I don't want my website to speak for my graphic work, I want my portfolio to speak for my graphic work.

Also, a nice basic website is much easier to navigate then an intense graphic site.

I'm just telling you what my first impression was. If the thought crossed my mind, it will likely occur to others too. I shall elaborate.

That "Go" button is almost identical to the TSF site, as well as the way you arrange your content in boxes, each in two columns, down the page. Also, what is that round play button looking thingy? It looks like the TSF logo to me. The color scheme is also very similar. You also have your logo dead center at the top of the page, with the same exact navigation links centered just below it. One or two similarites probably wouldn't matter much, but all of them combined makes it look like a copy.

I seriously don't see how anyone could open your site and TSF's site, side by side, and not think the same thing. It's almost laughable.

If you think I'm being too critical, think of me as devil's advocate. TSF is far more inclined to cry "rip" than I am, and they'll back it up with legal action.

I tend to agree with Mike, Styl.
It more than slightly reminded me of the TSF site and as Mike pointed out TSF is more than likely to see the similarities and be inclined to do something about it.

I'm sure you're talented enough to come up with something a little more original, if only for the sake of avoiding a bad image.

The site was created by 3 people, me one of them. If it is this bad... (I am probably missing the point...) I will ask what they think about it. I am not alone in this whole thing.

Mike, believe me, there won't be any legal action to backup anything, go and run a pixel check if you dont believe me...

All plagiarism (or not) aside, you need more pics on that site, man. There's way too much text and no flavour whatsoever. Also, the overall text layout is sloppy (which is something most skinners have in common).

Styl, it doesn't have to match up pixel for pixel to be a rip. If you make your own graphics and layout that look just like someone else's, it's still stealing. It seems like you're only willing to accept opinions that are favorable.

Skindication is indeed trademarked with the Federal Government. I should know as it cost me a fortune to do it. Well the attorney fees did. We never just slap a ™ on something unless we actually TM'ed it. Just to make sure that's clear. Skindication came from the idea that we will be syndicating our skins or in essence reselling one design to multiple people. The same way television studios resell their programming to their affiliates.

As far as comparing the site design with ours. I see definite navigation section similarities and the logo position but honestly after seeing this site i don't feel like its much of a threat to our design. Looks like you spilled bleach over it.

Oh here's a funny story speaking of rips... a client of ours the other day sends me their new SDK for their app. So i open it up and what do i find?? They jacked one of our old skins and converted the images in the format of their application. I was like HUH? I said man you RIPPED our skin!! hehe. Not only do i have to worry about winamp skinners creating unauthorized ports of our work, now i have to watch out for my clients. . They get a pass though because they are a great company. I just thought it was funny and worth sharing.

TSF I'm angry with you, it's been two weeks and I have yet to see the skin released, why torture me!? Why!? In other news, I do notice the similarities between both sites, but cannot really tell if its just coincidence or not so I'll leave this to the pros.

Mike, if you can rip a 'layout' or 'style' all sites on the whole internet could better get their servers down... hm, WC actually really look like all other skinning sites

Spilled bleach over it? funny indeed
(for seriouse, some idiot offered me $400 for the design after I gave him a link so he could check it out...

And no, I never wanted to be a thread to any design or design company but think of thi: You guys deliver quality work but that work probably comes at a high price. I like to think of myself as a person who delivers quality work but I bet I can deliver an interface at the fraction of the costs you guys do.

And yes, I know the spelling is bad on the site. Dutch guy eh... ofcourse that won't stay on it.

I think alot of other skinning sites are influenced by US, Here.
When this site was built there weren't alot of BIG Sites. There were the individual User Sites and Designer Sites, Skinz.Org, Custo, Deviant, and several smaller sites, but alot of the Skinz.org crowd came here, and Brad gave us a home, Skinz.org was the Quintessential Skinz Site. As I am sure alot of folks here will back me on this, when alot of folks gather together at one watering hole, there comes to be a melding of styles and a natural fusion of Ideas and influences (the creme always rises to the top, so to say.) In this then alot of sites will seem to have similar styles or flavours. You might like a text box from site "A" and A graphic layout (flow not image" or someting else, it doesn't matter. So WC is often imitated, but never DUPLICATED. When you work as hard as Brad, aND THE Gang on something, and it comes to perfection, then it is hard to not see it's influence on other sites, because alot of those "Other People" were from "Here." If you are trying to flatter TSF, ripping their Site and then Ripping someone else's Name, and then GlamHounding a Thread on WC (the Creme of the Crop Custo Page), you must be either a youngster playing at businessman, or an idiot playing at being a skinner.

Well, Styl, I think allot of these post or more helpful than anything else. Yes the style of your site looks like the skins factory. Yeah it is possible that most will not care a lick, but I just think that for a skinning firm or business you should be able to come up with something more 'original'. Original in the sense that there is a major skinning firm with a similar look and you might want to separate yourself a little more with the button style and background borders.

Hey take a look at Deviant Art in the category web interfaces. Lots of ideas there!!! In doing my research for the skin report (as well as other things) I found it and its amazing!!!

I recently made favorites of some of them on my anifanatic deviantart main page:

yeah, and even putting politics, memories, and even 'likeness' aside too, I agree its text heavy (but I assume that it is because it is in the design stages... the same with the spelling)

Text layout... well, I think artist tend to have a problem with that (and spelling) because they use a different part of the brain than people who calculate or are more into non-art activities.

So as an artist (sort of) I have to be very careful about spelling and style formatting and language. MAN THAT IS TOUGH!!!

I hope all this helps. From all the comments I see here you should have a very banging site when done.
