IE 7 on the horizon?

Internet News has an article about Internet Explorer 7 possibly being released before Longhorn. http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3392061
Sounds like we may see the features that Firefox and Opera have built in [ie: tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, cookie management, RSS feeds, etc...]

Netscape supports PNG. So does Mozilla and Opera. IE is the only browser right now who doesn't.

Haven't seen any definite reports that there will be a release of IE before Longhorn. It matters little to me though as I am a firm Firefox user now. Not that it costs MS anything to "lose" me, it still is poor business practics to "abandon" a product used so widely.

I used to use Firefox, its just that I like being able to type in an adress in the address bar in file explorer then it automaticaly switches to IE.
Firefox feels too much as a seperate app...

I'm personally sold on Firefox, I use a portable version on my thumb drive, and I'm going to install the Linux version on my Linux partition. I just thought it was interesting that after Mozilla and Opera had developed such a better browser, that MS would finally wake up and give IE the features it's been sadly lacking. Unless the next IE really rocks I'll still be with Firefox.

Microsoft said that you will be able to completely uninstall IE in the next installement of windows.
If only they could give the option to intergrate Firefox like IE that would kick butt big time.

IE's integration into the OS is part of its downfall. The latest round of exploits gain access your OS by way of IE. If your using a stand-alone browser even if someone does compromise your browser settings, it doesn't give them access to your OS.

Service pack 2 for XP includes a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. This works for me on the few pop-ups that make it past ie-spyad. (ie-spyad is a simple tool to add loads of sites to the restricted zone within Internet Explorer its available at https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm )

Ok, I have been with IE since version 3 so what makes firefox, mozilla, and opera so much better. Who knows, I might read a reason to change.

IE is integrally tied to the Windows OS, which is the weakness that allows the worst of the malaware to access your OS via IE. I don't know hwo far SP2 will go toward fixing this.
2.Tabbed browsing [ Opera can open a new browsing session with all the tabs you had open from your last session]
3. Built-in Pop-up blocker
4.Faster
5. Download Manager
6. Cookie Manager
7. Password Manager
8 Moz/FF or Opera are immune to Hijacking [CWS, IDG, LOP, etc...] as well as attacks that are ActiveX-based
9. Highly customizable via extensions [over 135 available] http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application= and themes link is for FF, Opera also has many custom themes available.
10. Supports the Open source community, where some [most ?] of the best work on the web is being done on a daily basis [again Moz/FF here, Opera is $39 US.]

I'm not inherently against Internet Explorer, or even Microsoft, but it looks to me like the only reason they're even thinking of improving IE is because others have built a better, faster, more secure product,and people have been migrating away from IE in droves. I hope IE7 is everything it should be, there are, after all some very talented folks in Redmond. I just think the alternatives are better products, and I imagine that by the time we see the next-gen IE, Moz/FF/Opera will have moved that much further ahead.

Well, I tried Opera, and I don't like it. Hard to tell why, I just don't like the feel of it.
Moz/FF is cool, but not faster at all. Quite on the contrary it's considerable slower, on my machines anyway. Maybe because IE is already loaded and built-in, but I hate to wait 30 to 45 seconds for FF to open (that's how long it takes the first time - for some reason, the second time it opens faster). Also, I always have to revert back to IE when I come to this site (some 1000 times a day) because some of the admin features require IE.

And I just like that IE has that consistent Windows look. Dunno, I just like it. :/

Allthough tabbed broswing would be nice in IE without having to download other browswers.
