Just got laid off.

The 30+ million dollar company that has 7 year old PC's and runs all their workstations and servers on NT4 just laid off their only PC Tech. They have 4 AS/400 Analysts/Programmers but cannot afford to keep a full time PC Tech on staff. Some things really amaze me. Talk about being blindsided. I never saw it coming. 
No worries though...My wife and I are starting our own company...TTech Systems! PC support for the average Joe
It's something we've been debating about for more than a year now. I guess it's time to put my money where my mouth is

All the power to you. There is a new co. around where I live that is booming doing what you are gonna try. They call themselves..rent a geek.

Thanks GM...we're going to get our business lisc. tomorrow. We're pretty excited. My wife is absolutly AWESOME. I thought the hardest part would be telling her but it was only hard for me. She's always there encouraging me to be all I can. She is everything a wife, and a beautiful woman should be...I don't know what I ever did to have someone like her love me like she does. I am truly a super blessed man. Or maybe I could say...self employed business owner.

Thanks LB...you hit the nail on the head. I was telling someone today that I'm always praying for God to move faster...I want it now. It seems he is always teaching me patience. This is the first time he has had to kick me in the butt and say...Let's go boy!

it's a scary and has it's high and low points on many levels.
but it really can work out to be the best move the two of you will make

There's a small computer repair business here that is too busy to train new help! They were saying last week that they need to hire more but the workload is too heavy. Good luck! You should do very well in your business!

Thanks again everyone. Essencay...your right. I'm going to pitch to them my rate and offer to service them. Some of their equipment is so old that a lot of it has reached end of life. Plus, I have tons of software tools they don't really know about or how to use. I really wish them no ill will. The people are good people. The management staff are good people too...they are just trying to do too much with too little.
I've learned that there is no money in selling items. TTech Systems will be a strictly, "Service Oriented" business. The only "products" we'll sell will be to support the repair process. After providing good services to folks for over 10 years, I've learned that "Good Customer Service" skills are as important, if not more important, than "Good Technical Skills."

Yeah, you should do great! market yourself to your own company and come up with a strategy that you think they will listen too. Plus, tell them that their old equipment still has some junk value. Try to get them to sell it.
And since you know them already try to come up with a way for people to work with less. Instead of 3 computers for 3 people, have one for 3. figure out some time schedule so that everyone get computer time and moves around.
I hope you also have a core competency for existing. Try to make it different from other like companies and something not easily reproduced by others.
Quality Customer Care could be a competency, working with computer hardware could be another.
And hey, you can make desktops for them too using Object Desktop!!! That will make you different. I am working on that now with some friends. I hope it works out for me, and I hope it works out for you too!!
