Site Idea

Saturday, August 7, 2004 by JDavidHarper | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Could we set up an RSS feed for each of the different categories of items available for download? That way we could just check the RSS reader to see if there were any new DesktopX items or any Windowblinds skins, etc.

Or we could look at the new additions list...

DWatson: Just in case you havent noticed it, not all new uploads are shown in that list!

Well not entirely but it does show alot more if you click on the words Newest Additions, and I know for a fact the list always show the new windowblinds and desktopx stuff

It will show all the new additions if you click on the words "newest additions". I uploaded my newest skin and it never showedup on the normal list until I clicked on the link. It wasnt posted to the library for two days and by then enough other new stuff was posted that it didnt show up in the list.

Mainly, I'd use the RSS feed to look at my RSS reader and see "Nope, no new DesktopX skins today" and not bother coming into WinCustomize at all. Saves me time and WinCustomize bandwith.

That's actually a really good idea! Also gives the authors who don't get much publication (because of the bigger authors) a chance to shine and be noticed.... Now I just have to wait for Safari RSS in Tiger

I haven't used it in awhile but doesn't the system tray browser do just that?

Yes, but in one of those annoying little speech balloon things. An RSS feed won't disappear after a few seconds, and it would be an a much more easy-to-browse format.

When you open up SDC and click on Skins and Themes, every category gets updates showing the category and number of new skins as such....WindowBlinds (12) If you click on the category and sort by date, you'll see the newest skins.

The problem with that is that you have to open up another program, whereas my RSS reader is on all the time. It's an at-a-glance solution.

Yes, but only if you are a WC subscriber!

Is this perhaps somewhere along the lines of what you are looking for? https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=3&SkinID=2746

The DesktopX object doesn't on my computer for some reason. It gets the data OK (I can set a MsgBox with the XML feed data), but that data doesn't get to the Internet Explorer window. Tried on both the latest beta and the current release version of DesktopX.

And my RSS reader can't recognize the XML feed.
