Old Crabs Skunk War..........

Saturday, July 3, 2004 by Old_Crab | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

........Pint, CC, and I were moving some of our new Micro-Brewery stuff down to the old "Haunted Barn" today. The 4th of July being a holiday and all we were in good "spirits" and finally decided to get serious with our beer making endeavours. The "Haunted Barn" down by the creek is an ideal place to make a barrel or two of brew. Cool even in the summer, and in Texas that's saying alot. Anyway our endeavour was cut short. Molassas and Sassafras (my hounds) stirred of a skunk and her kits. When a Mama skunk is riled she really lets go. To further the insult as they ambled off one of the kits (as a rear guard action I'm sure) turned and like a kitten does a little upward hop let go another stinker. I've taken 5 baths, 5 showers, and parfumed myself twice since this morning mishap. I evern went to the Feed Store and got a bottle of "Remove A Skunk Smell". To no avail. Anyway, we set a couple of "Catch Em Alive" traps and we'll battle the skunks again I'm sure. Seems as if Pint is immune to skunk oder and he said he'll handle the skunk family when caught. (Pint really is immune to most smells since a bottle rocket went up his nose a few years ago. The man was lucky it didn't explode, just burned his proboscis a bit. (This is true, I swear!). Anyway, we are determined to get the "Haunted Barn" back and we will get out Brew brewed. So hep me, Lord, so hep me. However, today we're just going to go down the road and get some fireworks and I'm sure when we arrive the crowd will part and give us first "crack" at the ion stand.

The battle scence took place here.............

my eyes are searing from the stank Does the ole wife remedy of tomato juice work? I've been fortunate not to have had to do a battle with stinkers myself. Right now I'm battling troop chipmunk. The critters keep tearing up my trash for coffee filters least that's what I keep having to clean up. Didn't know the little buggers had a caffeine jones . My bigger concern isn't really the chipmunks, but the black bears are out and about and I really don't need to be surprised by one of them tearing up my porch when I go out for a smoke. So every couple a days I've got to go out a rebag my trash and hose down the porch.

Nope. Nada. Nothing. I've even taken out old Grannies book of magic from it's dusty old shelf. As it reads-"to rid oneself of noxious oders of the woodland folk (skunks, possum, and rotted carcases) one should steel themselves and others by the admittance of one's foolhardiness by tempting fate and become aware that nature has intended this (fuming) for the woodland folks own protection.......goes on...and on.....concludes by reading ....the surest cure is by time and frequent apologies to others for the smell. >

What I really want is the "Haunted Barn" back. It's over 100 yrs old and has quite a past. Believe me when I say that it's haunted. And Boy O' some of the stories behind it are really spooky. Maybe I'll tell some of the tales of the "Haunted Barn" this October for Halloween. Hint. Ahem. Hint. Skins for Halloween. Even I don't go there alone. Besides the creek runs behind it with fresh clean aquafier water for our beer.

Every now and then one of the little critters takes a walk across my yard to get to the woods on the other side. I just let him take his stroll.

When I went outside for a quick ciggie, I saw an animal with bushy tail. I dunno if it was racoon or skunk on my porch steps. I didn't want to take a chance to see the animal fully. I walked back in quietly. I didn't want to smell skunky. Skunks looks cute, but STINKY!

I lived in a house once that the skunks had claimed as their "love nest". They would get under the house and just spray (and etc.) away! After enduring their amorous odours for about a year, I found some "termite odorant counteractor" (TOC for short) and within minutes the smell was gone! That is, except for the leather items it penetrated. I bought it at the local co-op and it was pretty cheap considering the miracle it worked. One word of advice though, DO NOT shoot a skunk between the eyes. It will spray for a good 10 minutes afterward. I saturated the area in powdered lime with a leaf blower to keep the critters away. It worked.

The skunks have moved out. No traps needed. Or at least they just haven't returned. We are seriously thinking of building a small tavern at the "Haunted Barn". The "Haunted Barn" Tavern. Something quaint. Anyway we spent all day Monday moving in our brewing equipment. We'll start brewing if we can get things set up properly. Or not since we're always stopping to sample the competitions brews. More on all this later. >

Old Crab, I love everyone of your stories. "Yes, even the stinkers."
When I see your name in the from field I always know I am in for an entertaining story. "The Life And Times Of Old Crab" would make for an interesting book title.

Thanks for the entertaining reading and always keep one eye open for those skunks. Hell, if you were to find out that they are ghosts of the haunted barn that would really be something.

sorry about the skunks. I think it is the "Haunted Barns" way of keeping you out!!! Using natures defenders. But you can't keep a good brewman down, unless he has drunk too much Good luck on the micro!!!

I feel bad for you Old Crab:( I had a dog that hated skunks and every time he went out side he would go and hunt the stinking critters and come home and oooo my
So I fell for you Old Crab the only thing that would work on him was alcohol but be real careful it can burn
