Yrag, Iplural, anyone else with good advice, I have a problem.

So I finally decided to get rid of my Nvidia Gforce2 card and install my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card. So I installed it carefully (while touching metal so there was no static discharge) and then I secured it.

I then booted up the PC and the monitor flickered on but the text on screen was messed up. Seems the card was only displaying every other line and some text was garbled.

So I took out the card carefully and inspected every part of the card under close observation. There seems to be NO cracks or broken parts on the card.

So what is wrong with it? Please keep in mind my board only runs at AGP 4x and it is a old board. BIOS date is in the year 2000. My Nvidia card runs fine so I suspect it is the card that is screwing up. But it was pulled from a working system so I am confused.

I will go test it on a friends system to see what happens. Any other advice?

Driver problem...? Did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers first? If you do that then install the card, it should then boot with the standard VGA driver and then you can install the ATI drivers. Try that if you haven't already.

I don''t see how uninstalling the Nvidia drivers would make a difference when you first boot. I did not even get to windows. I was refering to the bootscreen where it lists your processor and speed and how much memory you have and your drives. The card will not show every other line. And the text was garbled. But I checked and it was fully seated in the AGP slot. Sad really, because I need that card.

leave the ATI in, and reset your CMOS settings to default so that none of the ROMBIOS areas are being shadowed or cached.... boot and see if that fixes it...

No go IPlural. Same results. I even nuked the nvidia drivers and restored ALL of BIOS to defaults. I'm begining to think I have a dead card.

Might pay to check the monitor cable connector pins.....they do or can tend to bend if connected roughly.

Also...you didn't say whether the monitor cleared up after the VGA boot completed....did it work withinn Windows?

Fuzzy is right, those nvidia drivers have to be uninstalled. IP is right too...if that bios is from 2000 then disable Shadowing and Video Caching. Put the GForce card back in so you can see what you're doing download the newest ATI drivers http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html and uninstall the nvidia drivers. Shutdown and switch to the ATI card and then start in safe mode and install the ATI drivers you downloaded.

Checked them they are fine and dandy.

It did not clear up in windows at all.

Yrag: I nuked my Nvidia drivers and rest all the Bios settings. I did all you mentioned as well and still no go.

I just had an old 14" hack monitor [for system building] go garbled on me yesterday in vga boot....but turning it off 'hard switching' and on again and reboot again and it was fine....the problem was within the monitor, not the comp...

You need to find another computer and see if this card is trashed......sounds like it.

Wonder what the MB is? My bad memory seems to think that AGP4X wasn't around yet in 2000

OK...step one....put the old card back in...to prove the monitor is still alive....then put the new card into another system to prove it is still alive...then if the card still fails in your system it is a compatibility issue with the mobo....perhaps not able to adapt to the AGP speed.

Nope. but it IS a old 1997 emachines 13 inch monitor. This all might be the monitors fault.

Think I am going to trash the ATI card.

Why would you trash the card...do as Jafo suggested to see IF it is the monitor
