hey Yrag, IP..

with all of the dying hard drives and crazy boot problems, i thought this was humorous.

i turned off my machine for the first time in a month the other day, and when i came back and turned it on it ran for about 5 minutes then shut itself down. i turned it back on to whacked-out display settings. it ran for another 5 minutes, then shut off again. i thought this is strange, it is as if the thing is overheating.. my studio was hot, but not THAT hot! so i turn it back on and sit in my Bios, where it is giving me temperature readings and fan RPM's. system is running at 107fh, processor was at 156fh. i have an athlon, and it typically runs hot.. but that was.. REALLY hot.. however my system fan and processor fans were running fine. so i open up the case and inspect my 7 fans, thinking maybe it was the fan on the video card. everything was fine, but boy was the power supply hot. in fact, it was too hot to touch, and the back of the PS case nearly took the skin off my finger. i realized that the PS fan wasn't spinning.

so i kicked it.

the fan spun right up and began pushing out some extremely hot air. within 30 seconds the case was beginning to feel cool, and in a couple minutes was suprisingly the coolest part of the box.

so, i was suprised at how hot the PS gets over normal usage (mind you i'm using all of its 500 watts).. i was even more suprised at how efficient its fan was.. i figure it must have gotten stuck on some dust after i finally shut it off.

the moral of the story: everything works better when you kick it.

hmm... i had a powersupply take out a mainboard and processor a couple years ago, when my appartment had a power surge. definitly wasn't fun. the processor still worked but it, amazingly, was reading as a 400mhz chip when it was previously a 1.53 ghz chip.

that's a good call and i think i'm going to pick up a new box in the next couple of days.

...........

my brother had this monolith of a peice of crap computer he had built and whenever you walked up the stairs to his room, the computer would reset itself. it was the damndest thing. so one time he got so frustrated with it, he took a running start and kicked the thing square in the tower. a screw came flying out of the case. since then it worked fine...

we suppose there was a screw sitting on the mainboard in some non-visible spot, and everytime you walked up the stairs the vibrations would jostle the screw over something and short the machine out. a good kick cleared the pipes.

.....

my old car wouldn't start unless i kicked it a few times, too.. wans't the starter, either. silly Chrysler.

DC...if the fan sticks on startup.....replace the PSU NOW. Meltdown can kill your system totally. Preferably don't attempt to replace its fan, not unless you know what you're doing....and kicking electronic equipment 'feels good' but will do more damage than just to your foot...and is not recommended...

My old Commodore 128 used to get real rackety after being on for about an hour. I would give it a good thump on top of the case and everything would be fine. I used to set drinks on it...occassionally spilling, smoke when using it, never ever opened the case to blow out any dust and that thing ran fine for years. The thing was still running fine when I got my first PC and got rid of it. Guess they don't make computers like the used to

Jafo's got the right of it, though changing the fan isn't hard as long as you buy a PSU fan. Antec sells them for around $12.00 and they have the correct connectors. Thing is if you do not get the exact one it can cause more grief than you care to have, soooo.

I'd op for a new PSU with the highest rating I could afford, also one that actually meters it's power out put on each line. Too much power is a bad thing but too little power is just as bad. Again Antec sells a metered PSU.

Definitely stick with name brand.....you get what you pay for. I have an Antec TruePower PSU that regulates the fanspeed, which helps on noise level

I bought my 400 watt PSU off of ebay for a whopping 20 bucks. I bought it brand new in box.
