Disable EXPLORER SHELL?

Hi,
I'm using Objectbar for the tray icons and menus for system utilities/configs and ObjectDock for launching programs...
is it safe to disable the start of the explorer.exe service (winXP)?

i've shut down explorer.exe befoe and still had objectbar and object dock running.. but why would you want to turn off the shell? basically you can still start programs (try it out.. open task menu and close exlorer, but use the 'run' option to launch new things) but it'll be crippled.

Task Manager in XP means you don't really 'need' a shell to be running...though having one, either Explorer or one of the alternatives is still a better option as the whole intent of a GUI is to make life easier...

If you want to just 'hide' the XP taskbar and startmenu while keeping the ability to use explorer....DesktopX will do that for you

you can use object bar to do that too - make a 'system command' section and choose 'show/hide windows taskbar' under 'object bar commands'

I''d like to disable explorer.exe because now it seems I have 2 shells running: explorer.exe and OB/OD...
when I have a lot of windows opened, I see explorer.exe is using about 20 MB of memory... while I am actually not using the explorer shell... so it would save memory!
it seems useless to have 2 shells..
hiding the windows startbar is what I always did... but the startbar is still in the memory, it is just not shown on the screen

I think you can safely set the explorer service to manual, but Explorer is still going to open when you open folders, so I don''t see what it will save you. If Explorer use 20 Megs when you have a lot of folders opened, that won''t change. Unless you use an alternate program to open folders, such as PowerDesk. But then again, PowerDesk doesn''t really use less resources either, it''s just different and more powerful (although less pretty).
