You seem to have some extra time on your hands so I'll ask you a favor ..... go here http://www.eyeball-design.com/fxzone/frames02.htm , practice some of the tutorials and make a windowblind that would make the GUI Gods shout from Mount Pixolympus. When and if you do I'm sure we will all comment on it and let you know what we think.
I just think you can use your free time more productively, you even made a screensaver, maybe you could put that tallent to work as animations in the WB.

I dont really know how to work from scratch with just photoshop alone. I do much better when I have outlines of what I am doing. Next week I will be getting bryce 5 though and everything will change

We were all at that stage at some point of time...Nobody was just 'born' with Photoshop know-how.
Try some tutorials, use your imagination, experiment, and never, ever give up.

this might be old news,but..
all you have to do to recolor a skin (if you really dont wunna use the WB feature) is run a color brush over it in photoshop. i wouldn't say a recoloring takes ANY skill at all. building one or porting one maybe because you have to put it together. but opening up the images and just shading them...eh..
