Linux for Beginners

Thursday, April 8, 2004 by uM0p apsdn | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

To the point... for someone who is interested in Linux, where to begin? Which version do you prefer? Preferably a free version, as it will be used as experimental purposes, at first.

I just installed Mandrake Linux about couple of weeks ago. You can dowload it for free here http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/
It is pretty simple to set up.

Read an article about downloading the right version for the processor.
I have an AMD Athlon XP 2400+. Which version should I download?

I've dabbling in Linux a bit and I used Mandrake as well. Liked it very much.
I can also second Essencay' suggestion of trying Knoppix out. That way you can see if you like it before installing a proper build.
Also, SUSE Linux is available as a live eval CD based build too.

You want an i586 ISO.
The latest Mandrake build is 10, but I believe that's an early release version.
The last solid build was 9.2 I think, which came out in December or thereabouts , so it's worth looking that one out.
