Sunday, April 4, 2004 by Watson | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I downloaded the Sentinel Skin and the Half Life Skin by The Skin Factory, and they're great, but I want them in blue... Any suggestions?>>

You could try recoloring the images to your liking. I'm not sure how you could do that easily though, aside from doing them one by one.

Can't skin studio import the files and then you could recolor them?

a wmz file is just a renamed zip file. change the extension to .zip, open it up and you will find the images.

Ok umm... Not to sound stupid or anything but... How do I do that...?

right click on the .wmz file, choose rename, change the last three characters to 'zip' (no quotes), hit enter. Then double click on it and your unzipping proggie should appear. Extract all the files to a folder. You must maintain the folder structure of the skin or it won't work when you put it all back together. Make the modifications to the graphics, making sure to keep the names the same. Zip the whole thing back up. Change the extension back to .wmz and you should be good to go.

Oh, and btw, WMP uses color maps (at least it did when I was skinning it) for identifying different parts of the skin for mouseovers, activation, etc. They should be easy to recognize. Don't change any of those colors.

Hope that made sense

That didn't work... It doesn't say .wmz at the end of it it just say 'The Sentinel' & 'Half-Life_2' and that's all...

You might need to go to explorer>tools>folder options>view and *uncheck* "hide extensions for known file types"

Well crap, I had it entirely changed and it doesn't work... Is there anyone out there who would consider maybe skinning it and sending it to me...? I could give ya some exclusive wallpapers or something...

Modding another's works and redistributing them is a no-no.

I could give ya some exclusive wallpapers or something...

This phrase raises eyebrows as well.....exclusive to whom?

Sput suspects that DWatson has changed the graphics, but hasn't then re-zipped the folder and changed the name back to .wmz and applied the skin.

But I could be wrong.

Sput is also worried by the tone of the offers to "exchange" things

exclusive to whom

Probably ones that he would make special for me. (note: I dont honestly need anything in exchange.)

Modding another's works and redistributing them is a no-no.

But it would be ok if he modified them for his use? I'd just like to help him out, not distribute. If its any consolation, I wouldnt be using the modified skin, just modding it for him. I dunno if this is a big deal, but then again, knowing Jesh, I'd probably get flamed and sued for it. Oh well.

Cerebro.....if you mod and distribute to a third party...or even distribute without consent to a third party then you are likely to violate the artist's copyrights pertaining to distribution.

The reality is that you can modify or do whatever you like with it on your OWN computer...but you cannot pass that 'whatever' onto another person.

Ok.

DWatson: Email the Skins Factory, and see if they'll let me modify it for you. Plus, Sput might be onto something.

Wow, what a thread!

Anyway, maybe contacting Skin Factory would be best. They can tell you how to recolor the images.

I still think, though, that what people said here should work. Once you change the wsz file to a zip file... yada yada yada

boom, recolored skin.
