Need advice and comments about a name and style change.

Sunday, April 4, 2004 by Styl-X Design | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Hello all.

I have the feeling that styl-x is dead. I get enough customers, thats not the problem however it isn't the business style I am looking for. I am already working on a new design for styl-x and I was also thinking about a new name. Lately I get alot of customers that want to order 'brand identity'.
This is what I want my new company to be focused on, but I also want to keep the skinning part of the business.
I already got a few designers and coders that would be intrested in participating in this new project and they are feeling the same way about it, I just want to have some second opinions.

This is the idea: (and believe me, I WILL sue you if you steal it )

The new name will be: SKINDICATE
Our slogan will be: Because the extra mile is our standard.

What do you think?
If you have any better ideas, feel free to post them!

Styl skinner - in law, it wouldn't matter if no one remembers the prior use as long as it could be demonstrated, which if can be. The advice we're giving is that useing a name with established prior use in the same field as you intend to use it for is not just "a bad idea", it's open to legal action.

Now, they may not decide to do anything, but you can't start out in business using a name and knowing that at some point you may have to change all your promotional matterial etc and be liable for compensation - that would just be silly.

Unless you get the official nod from them (and it would need to be in writting I would suggest), then you have to Drop it and move on - and the tone of the messages here indicates you're not going to get that authorisation.

It will remain styl-x. I came up with the name skindicate when I was talking with a friend and we were found it a great name, he already wanted to order it but I just wanted to know some second opinions about it, then found this out.
The new design we made will be used for styl-x as wel as the new style and the new way we handle projects.

Thats all, get back to work

It can be difficult coming up with a name you not only like, but that isn't already taken. Upon seeing your name choice I recalled immediately that it had been used before. Certainly to be associated with that name would give you immediate recognition, however it would be like lying to people also. I don't think it matters whether you have permission or not, since its had a prior incarnation, it comes with preconcieved ideas. You want to be able to create your own ideas onto your customers.
Any new name requires proper research, something you have done through this post. I think that a simple google search would have given you information first that it wasn't a good idea to use the name.

I think you were right earlier that you needed a name that didn't include the word 'skin'....especially if your business encompasses more than just skinning applications.

The key element is designworks, sory if someone has already suggested it.

I think you get the point. My other suggestion was so quickly shot down I felt it necessary to waste some more time and space.
