Is it really a breach of rules?
I just thought it was discouraged because the OP usually gets some ripe comments that hurt their feelings...

Well, OK...not exactly explicitly against the rules, but it's in the same line as uploading a wallpaper in the screenshots section etc...the best thread on the issue would be this one:

Trawling for comments is not smiled upon....
Comes under the heading of self-promotion....and usually results in candid criticism that the requester wasn't quite expecting...
