yep, Blender is an amazingly powerful program. but you need a book to learn how to use it, so it´s not really "free".

Metasequoia LE 2.1 is also free. don´t be scared the app is fully translated: http://www21.ocn.ne.jp/~mizno/metaseq/download.html

I just downloaded blender and opened it up. Oh man, I am guessing the learning curve is huge! Hopefully the pdf manual will help. Then the book isn't necessary. I got some learning to do.

I'll make this a sticky thread. If anyone has any links to other good free 3D apps, stick them in here.

Blender is by far the most fully featured. it also imports DXF files. if it´s "better" depends on much you get comfortable with the app. i have it here since ages and have never really gotten started with it.
it seems Wings3D can do pretty cool things as well. this is a wip shot of a Rainmeter skin Giraffe has started working on. it´s done with Wings3D, UVMapper, Photoshop and Bryce. http://www.adamdorman.com/dial_wip2.jpg
niceness, i think i really need to have a look into CAD and 3D as well. lot´s of things could be done better than in just Photoshop i guess.
