Question about DNS (domain name registration)

Tuesday, March 16, 2004 by nkannan99 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I am planning on registering a domain, and I have a few questions about it.

1) How do these companies register domains? Like, if I were to buy a domain, exactly what would these DNS companies do to register it. Is it possible for me to register my own domain instead of paying a company?

2) What services would you recommend?

I know that this question may be a little inappropriate for this forum, but I was hoping I could get some help

Thank You

As far as I knew DNS ment Dynamic Name Server.
The company has the domain name and he links the URL to your IP addres. (where you can have your own server)

Really read the agreement. Some domain sellers don't sell it to you, but "rent" it to you. Look elsewhere if thats the case. Second part: No. You can set a web server and give away IP address, but if you want domain name, you have to buy one.

Once you get domain, login and set IP address to whatever IP your server is. needless to say, you MUST have static IP and not dynamic IP on your server, that is if you decide to use your own server.

Oh yeah read the agreement about permit to transfer your domain to other seller. Some won't even allow you to make your own server or look elsewhere for web and email hosting. Yes, you can have separate domain seller and web/email host.

DNS = Domain Name System (or Service)

To register a Domain Name you have to go through a Domain Name Registrar. There are hundreds if not thousands of registrars.

Most Web Hosting Companies offer packages that give you free Domain Name registration when combined with their hosting service. Prices vary, and quality of service varies tremendously. I recommend researching the companies quite a bit before making a choice. If you are unhappy with the service that the company provides, you can usually transfer the domain to another hosting company, but sometimes it is a real hassle.

If you don't need the hosting service, and only want a domain, there are registrars that you can deal directly with.

Use google or another search engine to find "domain name registrars" or "web hosting". Again just be aware, there are lot's to choose from, and the quality of service is something to consider.

Try searching for "web hosting comparisons" to get ideas of good and bad companies to deal with.

I have used http://www.975register.com for years now and love it. I've sent many co-workers and friends here as well. Also, I've had http://www.mydomain.com referred to me as well and it looks pretty good.

I wonder just how many people surf and have no clue as to what internic is or have not ever been on the site before?

Orion shudders...
