Maybe pov-ray if you want to learn a little about making really good 3d images.
And you sure did find the right place to learn about customizin your desktop.

It also isn't as expensive as 3ds max or other 'big' programs.

I believe also that early versions of "Bryce" are available with some graphics magazines too. Used to be avaialable on the web, but got pulled by Corel a while back.
To further these, if you want to play with the results of the things *you've* (well, the proggy really) made, I have also seen (free) full versions of Paint Shop Pro 5 on graphic arts magazines.
Should be enough there to give you the start you're looking for.
Most graphics programs do have a trial version, which is usually good for around 30 days use. Get on over to Google, and see what you can find.
Good luck to you
and welcome

kongit made a good point, i dont wanna rush out there and buy an expensive program when i dont really know what im doing.
ill look at this bryce. sounds like a good start.
speaking on languages:
you say there is no need to learn "vb" or what ever u use to write scripts?
like for an example iv seen a desktop object that has an option which allows u to edit the script. was this script computer generated or did someone write it? sorry if this is a stupid question(tho i think it is
