What does anyone here think about WinAmp?

Sunday, March 7, 2004 by joetheblow | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I just visited the site and wondered into the plug-in area and realized just how far WinAmp has come.

Does anyone plan on making a WinAmp player with a plug-in to go with it for the GUI Olympics?

I generally keep a player hidden while its running and Winamp has done the job the best. I find WMP and MMJB to be more resource hungry. However I use MMJB for ripping since I like how it does that better than others I have tried.
I especially like the feature in the modern skin for WA5 that shows a notification of which song is playing when a new one starts. WMP can do that, but seems only when its in the taskbar. For those who are scared of trying WA5 and stick with 2.x . Sure 2.x works just fine, but WA5 has a few added features that make it worthwhile, plus the ability to use free form skins if you are into that. It works as well as 2.x, none of the clumsyness of 3.
I have tried a few plugins here and there for WA, and they can be useful. Overall though I don't have a need for them.

I can't enjoy using winamp. Yes it is nice but after you have created 1 skin for it, you will hate it, believe me.
It is working with layers, maki, java, xml and all that kind of stuff. Coding it really isn't fun.
There will be a winamp skin from styl-x for the GUI olympics thought. I am going for the xbox

using it is ok, just a little bit.... well, I am not sure how to name it but I don't have a good feeling with it when I am using it, I prefer my WMP. On the other hand, with winamp you will never see aliased edges, it supports .png and that really is great.

winamp was the only choice left. while winamp has grown on me and is a nice player. the amount of free form skins is limited.

Are you sure your talking about WinAmp?

WinAmp can be very source hungry, but I have found that some skins do not take that much resources... I think its just a personal preferance when it comes to players. I used to ALWAYS use MMJB but now I use it just to rip. I will admit the features on MMBJ are more likable to me, but WinAmp just has more skins and is far more configurable (as in I could make my own skin in a matter of a few weeks.. not the greatest skin but a skin

Anyway, back to skinning...

I wasn't going to make a WinAmp skin for the contest but I if I do I want to make a AVS to go with it.

I really like this one:

There are others too. Really nice. I haven't played with the games for WinAmp yet... I have one skin that is a game (Space Invaders)

Gosh, I love WinAmp.

For me that makes it easier... Don't know why. With WMP, for me is harder to understand. But now that I have SkinStudio Pro I don't worry about it any more. If I want to get complex, I can with some research, but at least I have a somewhat decent skin.

h.... MMJB would be cool for me if I could skin it. That thing is ridiculous to skin.

Winamp 5 is not rescource hungry, If I use WM9 the CPU usage is about 80-100%, with Winamp CPU uasge is about 8-15%

I would go for Winamp 5.02, it's worth it

Yes I know JTB, I gave it a try a time ago, I was trying to port a skin. Stopped with it when I realized it gave a fatal error everytime when I moved the file-edit-etc buttons. The play buttons could move tought...

Whoa... if your cpu is that high using WMP9 relative to Winamp, I'd say that something is seriously wrong with your WMP. Is it a particular skin giving you that kind of reading? I had one skin that would do that to me on WMP, but I have had that problem with a couple Winamp skins, too.

My WMP9 does take slightly higher resources than my Winamp 5 on average, but nowhere near that extreme.

I have WMP running right now with 40 songs in the playlist. It shows up as NO cpu usage, and only 6megs of ram.

yes ..while i have seen quite a few free form skins.the majority are square...but dont get me wrong there are many nicely skinned free form skins.

im used to freeform skinners in media players like, doodle (aka riddlah),vixen, vendicator, eric "Wreckk"centeno and "kig" to name a few..

im not trying to insult or slam others. cause thats not my intention
there are many beautiful (square) winamp skins...

but theres only a few that really have turned my head in the (freeform) style for winamp.r peterclark, sowmiles and -naos- to name a few ...but theres just not as many free form skins to choose from in winamp.......

I wouldn't dream of telling you to upgrade your rig, Stumpy.

I'm just surprised by the differential between your running WinAmp and WMP, given they both run on the same setup. I just think you have something else going on that is causing the WMP to use so much more of your resources. Perhaps a bad skin, or something else conflicting with WMP.

I'm not trying to convert you to WMP, either. I only commented because that's the biggest difference I've seen or heard about between the two players.
