WindowBlinds used to have a setting to make explorer window backgrounds "transparent".  Actually it was a duplicate of your wallpaper from whatever location the window was in.  Something about WindowsXP made Stardock remove that feature. With the speed of new CPUs and graphics cards, it would be great to get that feature back again.
The buttons Stumpy mentioned are a transparency plugin by GreenReaper that lets you adjust the transparency of the entire window. I know it's in a skin I made called Alien Technology but I don't know what other skins have used it.

It's a built in WB feature that can be assigned to the click attribute like any normal function.
