How to Restore Application Icons in Windows XP? Please Help!

Help! My application icons (exe files, shortcuts)
no longer show what they are supposed to. They all
display the Windows Default Icon (unless I change
it with IconPackager, after which the default icon
for that package will be shown instead). Even the
applications themselves show those default icons.
For shortcuts to applications the "Properties->Change
Icon" will let you choose the icon, but when you click
on "apply", it won't change. If you let it point to an
external .ico file, however, that icon will be displayed.
Shortcuts to non-apps still display correctly.
My idea is that some registry key has been changed.
What do you think? No need to tell me to empty the icon
cache, that didn't work, neither did anything that's
obvious.

OK. Thanks for sharing. I turned off system restore though. 
I am thinking of reinstalling windows, think there's a way to do so without losing all the other settings?

Not sure, never installed XP as an upgrade. Someone will be able to answer this though

You could do a Repair Install: (also called "In place reinstall")
This will leave your presently installed apps and settings as they are.

This can be sorted in IconPackager. Start with "Tools > Restore all icons" > reboot, then "Tools > Rebuild icon cache" > reboot. That should put everything back to normal.

happened to me, about the same thing that has happened to you and the only way I could get the defaults back was to do a system restore. I'll see if I can find my thread on it and post a link to it here to give you some more things to try
