Since 2 weeks i dont have any system sounds any more (startup-shutdown-waste bucket) all the ones configured in the sounds-tab.
i have tried different drivers ... and many more items ! its not a mute button !!
when i test the system sounds they work... also i have music, some MSN-sounds (configured there) ..

You should also tell them it's a SoundBlaster Live! sound card

The only thing I can think of is to open Control Panel/Sound,Audio/Sounds and create a new profile and apply it. Something changed your Registry settings and this should correct it if that's what the problem is and not something else.

I tried for sometime to help him in the chat room, but we couldn't resolve the problem.

What is happening is this, music files play and in the control panel sounds play, but when a sound is supposed to play (ie Close/Open Window) there is nothing (not a note).

We tried all the Control Panel, Volume, Mute settings, and even an outside program, nothing

System is XP, SB Live card, I'm sure someone here coul;d help him, if anyone can it would be a great help, thanks

I would like to see an answer to the system sound problem. I have a Dell 8300, Xp and an Audigy soundcard and have lost the startup and shutdown sounds. I updated the drivers from Creative's site because I wasn't happy with the sound performance with the Dell drivers and Dell didn't offer an update. I have a hunch that caused the startup/shutdown sound problem, but I'm not sure.

If anybody has any ideas, I would love to hear them.

#1 - if you didn't un-install the Dell drivers, that's a problem onto itself
#2 - check in Creative 'Surround Mixer' and make sure it correlates with your sound settings in Control Panel/Sound and Audio
#3 - look in your 'Profile ' in Sound and Audio/Sounds and make sure those sounds are assigned...you might have to create a new profile and see if that fixes it.

Thanks yrag. I have checked #2 & #3 numerous times and I don't think the problem is there.

#1 I don't remember if I uninstalled the Dell drivers first, but probably didn't. I will try that when I get the time (it's tax season).

It's not a big deal, the sound works perfectly playing music, videos, etc. I just can't get the startup and shutdown sounds.

Thanks again,
jebland

I now have created a new sound profile ..
and i have checked that the surround mixer and sound settings correlate .. they do ..when i change one the otherone does the same thing ... on all the slides.
The new profile didn't help !
But about the registry mentioned by yrag .....
I did download Regsupreme and ran it, and applied the changes it suggested.
That was around the time I lost the sounds.
Lateron I undid the reg.changes thinking it might solve the sound problem.. did not help though. (was it wrong to undo the changes made by regsupreme after more then a week)

'Surround Mixer' with a SB Live card? Exactly what drivers are you using for your card?

i have driver version 5.12.2.252 downloaded from creative.
filename was LiveDrvUni-pack(ENG).exe
My card has the following model number : CT4830
What is wrong then ??

Doesn't sound right, but it certainly could be...go here http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp and look up your card under 16-bit and make sure you have the right one. Make sure you look for any Creative (XP) patches that you may not have...

Well, i checked and checked ...
My card seems to be an SoundBlaster Live! Value Digital according to their list. I cannot choose this from the driver list but checked all the Live! and Value driver and they all point to the driver I previously mentioned ... also tried the automatic updater and also checked the Read This First paragrafs.
But I have uninstalled the drivers anyway and first reinstalled the (old) cd-drivers and then the UniPack ... when I look at the driver-version numbers I have the latest accordingly to the creative website... should be right.
Just one thing that didnot add up... after the driver-versionnumber 5.12.1.252 there are a few more numbers ... for my pc they are 1.31.120 and at sometime yesterday I saw in the Read This First section that they said It should be, i think 1.42.xxx or 2.42.xxx but they dont go into that subject any further...
I think I have to solve this first by contacting creative and find out what is wrong there before I let you guys think any further for me.
So it might be a driver problem after all. When it is I will tell you of course, if it is not I will to... ...
For now, thanx for your tips and time spent thinkin about it ...
