'Angel' gets cancelled.

After 5 seasons, it looks like 'Angel' has followed its parent show 'Buffy' into the great abyss. In a statement just released from The WB, they say that the current season will be the last. This move drives a stake through the heart of the final remaining part of Joss Whedon's 'Buffyverse', and will come as a huge shock to its many fans.

As someone who has unashamedly followed both shows since the beginning, I find this a really sad move on the part of the network. With this news coming in the same year that 'Friends' and 'Frasier' have finally been axed, it looks like we really are coming to the end of a great era in television history.

Are there any fans of Whedon's work here, and if so what future do you think the whole 'Buffyverse' has beyond the end of 'Angel'?

Hmm well actually I found Angel quite interesting when he was originally on Buffy but when he went off on his own adventures on his own show I lost interest quickly...

Guest character which stayed on so long that he finally got mentioned on the intro.

I wish they'd stop those goddamn reruns and finish the season they so abruptly ended for that @#$% "summer break".

Bytheway, ever noticed how similar some of the characters in Buffy and Angel are?

Thankfully we have the two upcoming Farscape TV movies to look forward to. That's another show which deserved to live beyond its short lifespan

Yeah. It's my understanding that they're probably about 1/2 way through filming it (production began in Decmeber, IIRC).

They were good, but unfortunately over far too soon. It was never conceived as an ongoing series, but rather as a short glimpse into the future of the Buffyverse.

Ah well. I shall still give it a go. There is some rumor that Whedon will be writing for one of the X-Men comic books

Getting back to the cancellation, the network said something regarding possible TV movies next year, but they have said the same regarding other shows that had been cancelled an no such TV movies have made it to screen, to the best of my knowledge. There had also been some long held idea of a Buffy / Angel theatrical movie once the shows had run their course. But I imagine if anything, Whedon is more focused on a Firefly movie at this point.

Even with they advance notice Whedon et al were given about the cancellation, I wonder if they can wrap up the open plot issues (both the minor ones this season, and the overall story arc of Angel, redemption, and the prophecy) in a satisfying manner

Yeah, there are some rough parallels that can be drawn between them

Fred and Willow: the brains
Wes and Giles: the historians/watchers
Gunn/Lorne and Xander: the wise-ass'es
Conner and Dawn: the annoying teenagers
Cordy and Anya: the blunt, tactless, spunky women
Angel and Buffy: the heroes
