Travis, regarding the original problem, sounds like you had the theme service disabled in XP, and if so, you probably did it whilst still running one of the default MSstyles.
That would produce the symptoms you experienced.

man, just get an 80 gig hard drive at office max for 20 bucks after rebates (western digital) and thats all you need man.
