Help! It's dead.......!

My optical mouse appears to have died...
I started the puter this morning and had no light on my mouse or movement of my cursor. Does anyone know if this is a common occurrence with the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer? Do I have to buy a new one, or could it be something other than the mouse itself? Any suggestions are welcome.
(The mouse is approx. 3 years old, is connected via USB, and has only been dropped once...

No battery compartment visible anywhere...... I think it takes power directly from the computer via the USB.

Damn! I don't want to buy a new one! I like this one. Someone said it may be a mouse software problem, would it be worth running the installation disk again?

won't that be difficult if the mouse isn't working?
