now why I posted this. I woke up at 7 in the morning and didn't have to....
I am angry at myself for being an idiot.
How can I forget that I didn't have classes today.
Oh well, lets all enjoy this United States Federal Holiday

Now that I have a civil service job (I work for my county's public health department), I have today off. Never used to get it when I worked for private businesses. I still woke up at my usual time, though, gosh darn it. And I get to use my day off to take my car in for servicing, yippee skippee 
. But I do appreciate the 3-day weekend.

philadelphia uses this day as a civil service day.. they round up volenteers to run around the city and clean things up and help people. kinda cool. this year they were anticipating the best turn out ever.

A great man was MLK. But I will admit that there are plenty of other men just as good as MLK that don't have holidays named after them.

I don't think its a matter of anyone not being as good as anyone else. This is not why there is a holiday named after him. sheesh, Travis, give the dead guy a break. I only know one other person who has a holiday named after them that died for what they believed in, in this country. Remember too, this is an American Holiday. That other person was Abraham Lincoln. Now someone is going to say that MLK was not as good as Abraham Lincoln. I say, is anyone better than anyone else? No, they are not. This is just what MLK died believing in.

In 1983, through legislation signed by President Reagan, a federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was created.

I admit what I wrote is misleading, but good and equal are two different things. My question is would MLK want a holiday in his honor? If all men are equal why does he have a holiday named after him? Again I understand its symbolic importance and whatnot, but still having a holiday in the honor of a person just seems wrong to me. Any person that would want to have a holiday in his name after he dies has serious problems.
I enjoy this holiday and what it stands for, however I don't completely agree with the approach.
