I was just trying to help out some. I wouldn't buy a Dell, when you could build one cheaper, upgradeable and better for less. Especially in that price range. And Dell support is like any other support if you know what I mean Better off going to a (this) forum.

You also might want to wait till PCI Exprees becomes the new standard and replaces AGP8X. Like DesignCaddy said, there is also the 64bit processors.

What I wanna know is...if you're willing to drop $5k on a PC...why on earth would you buy it from Dell??

Some links to better help you on your quest for a decent PC.

maybe beause of the TRW on site and drop shipment support with total system swap if it needs to be sent into the shop? unless that isn't included in the price?

For Sir Hus: I took a quick look at each. Wow, I never thought that such existed. It will take me some time to look over each. Hey, thanks much for this direction. As to the first link, you must listen to Art Bell.

For wickenmaidtoall: Which one do you have? And so, if you purchase the upgrades...as they are now...you would get the upgrade(s) for free? Alienware looked real nice as did Voodoo PC. I was not too impressed with Falcon Northwest though.

An entire terabyte of HDD space on the 'extreme'?

Can you spell 'overkill'?

depends. i could probably fill that all up with mp3s with this big cd collection I have.

Oh yeah?

Ok, 1 Terabyte is 1024 Gigabytes... which in turn equals 1,048,576 Megabytes...

Assuming that your average Mp3 is 3 Megabytes, youd have room for around 350,000 songs...Or about 17,500 CD's worth of music...(at 20 songs per disc)

Unless youre doing some serious movie creation/editing...I see no reason for that much space...

in video editing, you find that GB's are like MG's. they get eaten up really god damn fast. or, if you happen to be storing a divx collection. 30 movies isn't uncommon, and thats around 30 gigs. i had, before my wma-mp3 conversion dissaster, 30 gigs of wma's..now we're up to 60 gigs, 20 gigs of programs, 80, another 20 gigs of games, thats 100. i could use a couple terradrives and never have to worry about storage again.

I might need something like that...

From Photoshop to Illitrator files to Adobe Premiere, 3D Studio, AutoCAD, MYA and AfterEffects.

From MicroMedia's Director 8.0 (or higher) and MX apps to designing web apps in VB and C++

Then you get Stardocks' Desktop X2 Pro designs, Windowblinds folders, IconPakager and developer and so on PLUS any and all other apps (WinAMP, WMP, Word, PowerPoint, MP3's, et al), I might need a system like the one he has.

Can't afford it... yet. My goal is next year this time. Probably be a dell too like this gentelman.

Oh and don't foget that downloading movies from pay to watch sites will also be on your hard drive.

I am not sure if a program like Partition Magic works on RIAD (probably doesn't... and its possible that you don't need it anyway if you have RIAD) but it would be good to check on programs like it to see if your hard drive can preform better.

and games too... I forgot about games.

I personally only want a couple of them but after4 or 5 games you can take up 10 gigs. My Train Simulator gams takes up 3gigs and that is before I started making new routes.

I just got my XPS 3Gig with 2Gig of Ram and the 19inch LCD. It is awesome!!!

Performance is exceptional, display is amazing, and the Radeon 9800 works awesome. I'm copying my DVD's from the rental store, Making my own DVD's from the family outings, I use it as a Tivo machine and burn the episodes I record to DVD. And Games...Don't get me started.

I love it...and it wasn't 5k. (But it was still too expensive) I am abundantly blessed with it!
