A Truly, Truly Bizarre Story
Mon January 12, 2004 10:19 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - German police are investigating after an angry man returned a computer he had just bought saying it was packed with small potatoes instead of computer parts.
The store replaced the computer free of charge but became suspicious when he returned a short time later with another potato-filled computer casing, police in the western city of Kaiserslautern said Monday.

"The second time he said he didn't need a computer any more and asked for his money back in cash," a police spokesman said.

Police are now investigating the man for fraud.

When I worked at Sears I guy tried returning a computer packing box that he had kept the computer and filled the box with rocks and resealed it.

Back in 1990 a friend of mine working at JCPenny had someone in St Pete return two PackardBells with the drives and ram removed and was only caught when he tried it a third time at a different story across the bay in Tampa.

it's amazing to me that people have the intestinal fortitude to try things like this.. I personally don't fancy the idea of spending time in jail just to get some free computer parts.. I guess it's worth the risk to some.

what strikes me is how stupid the guy was, in this case, to try and return the computer a second time in the same place with the same bizarre problem.. and they think people won't back-check these things?

Just reading the news I find it amazing at how many stupid people there really are. I guess that might not be true. The numbers of stupid people in the news compared to the normal and smart people probably isn't a very good proportion for real life. News these days is about whats interesting, and face it stupid people do some pretty interesting things.

Hm I know someone who had enough guts, with real recipt, just go in store and grab item in recipt off shelf and "return it".

He was caught few times. He was really hooked on gambling. I think for some people, gambling is just like drug.
