They're at it again
Possible MS W12 machine requirements
Tuesday, January 23, 2024 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Personal Computing
I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I can't. I don't know if it's true, but I expected this. Just like W11...which W12 will be, or 24H2, Hudson Valley or Next Valley...a rose by any other name.
New chip and RAM requirements.
Apparently 16 GBs of RAM for your CoPilot, a new keyboard with a CoPilot key, Lunar Lake chips as Meteor Lake chips have too few operations per second for AI:
"For reference, the current Intel Meteor Lake CPUs run at 34 TOPS, making them ineligible to power AI PCs. However, the upcoming Lunar Lake CPUs are expected to be rated for AI PCs. The new AMD Zen 4 APUs are rated at 39 TOPS, coming up just short, but the brand’s Strix Point Zen 5 APUs are expected to be compatible. Meanwhile, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip exceeds the threshold at 45 TOPS." - DigitalTrends (linked above)
My computer's brand new. AI? Not worth it for me to even consider upgrading. MS can keep its UI, and if my machine isn't enough for their new OS, T.S. Eliot: I'll be the outmoded mod.

It will be pushed on us so hard that we eventually give up fighting against it and join the club. For better or worse, it's here to stay!
Think about how many folks can afford a computer like that.
The prrcentages of Windows users by OS: There are still folks on W10 (67.46%), 11 (26.52%) 7 (3.34%), 8 (0.28%) , 8.1(1.66%) and even XP (0.64%) although not a lot.
MS is painting itself into a corner...but don't worry: Apple, Android, etc. will race to join them. Saddest trend for what started as a product you had control over and which bettered your life. It's now our master.

I am staying on Windows 10 as my primary OS... until I am not on Earth anymore.

W10 will have extended support after October 2025 which is the end date for MS W10 lifecycle simply because too many users cannot, will not or can't afford to upgrade. I will stay as long as I can on 10 simply because it's working perfectly for my needs, and Jafo is still on W7 I think. 🙃
By all means. MS has gone off the deep end with the AI crap. Jafo's on W7 because 0Patch protects him better than MS can.

You're on Earth?!
No one tells me anything!

More reasons than that...eg potential issues activating FSX without having to start from scratch with purchase of a new copy via Steam. When you have around 15 years invested into a flight sim whose installation is 218gig...with the odd Tb or 2 of backups and other aircraft graphics etc.
It's just been nice to NOT wake up one morning only to discover an MS update has bricked your machine while you slept...

Fair dinkum. When they did that "forced update" thing to Starkers despite his update choices, I understood that it's their OS and they'll do anything they please to one's machine...all for one's "security", of course.

I just can't pretend to be shocked. When Win11 came out I remember saying I'd be torqued off if I bought new hardware for it only to find out in a couple of years it wouldn't run the next version. So I continue to cruise around on my comfortable old battleship with its dings and scrapes and backfires.
I've had a look at that 3rd party Windows patch maintenance site and it's looking very reasonable to me. Thanks for pointing that out guys.

The hundreds (if not more) calls received from 2:30 to 4:30 AM would confirm that claim for me, pelaird.
Btw, while many fear AI's misuse (for good reason), I do not classify it as evil. That judgment is case dependent, tied to how it'll be used/misused. After all, radiation therapy is an adjunct for treating cancers, as opposed to thermonuclear weapons.

Agreed, almost all technological achievements represent a two sided coin. Good vs. Evil.

Exactly!
I have used Copilot a couple of times instead of searching for information on the web. I also had it write a professional letter once, which I must say, saved me hours of searching online. However, I'm not about to pay $20 a month so Copilot can provide limited help in Microsoft 365 (Office 365).
I have been running 32GB of RAM for some time now, which seems to be the sweet spot for creators.
Unfortunately, I believe AI, i.e. Copilot, is here to stay whether we like it or not. It seems to be the new frontier for technology, and Microsoft is going to exploit it for all it's worth (financially speaking). It will be pushed on us so hard that we eventually give up fighting against it and join the club. For better or worse, it's here to stay!
