x-box recognition of CD-R

It doesn't, for me anyway. Is this normal? There shouldn't be any reason for anything which plays cd's not to recognize this most popular format, but maybe I don't have it set up correctly?

Hmm it sounds like that Microsoft made a smart move and denied people a way to play copied games on x-box.
Cd-r is in different format, so cd drive have to support reading cd-r, which is different than reading regular cd-roms.

If anything, it will read cd-rw. There are three types of drives: Thompson, Samsung and something else--I believe one of those reads all cd-rws (and I think some cd-rs) while another only reads some...It's funny like that. Also, if you update your Xbox for Xbox Live (some games can do that) it will prevent you from reading cd-rws all together--thats what happened to me. The ability to read them depended on the brand.

This feature meant to prevent the reading of CD-Rs is unfair to people who mix and burn their own CDs from other CDs that they bought. It is also unfair to those that purchased their music off of legal online music services such as iTunes and burned the CD themselves.

Get the Xbox Music Mixer thing and you can transfer MP3s from your pc to your Xbox--requires XP.

Well I believe all three drives would read Memorex CD-RWs and one drive would read other CD-RW brands and some CD-Rs. There is a way to tell what brand drive by a number (before you buy) and also the design of the drive itself. I think one of the newer drives reads both CD-R and CD-RWs--there was a big discussion on it and so many people say so many different things.

thanks for the responses I thought that the CD in the XBox would be new enough to be able to read cd-r for audio tracks anyway.

Actually they charge money to repair your XBOX even if it is still under "warrenty". I hear it takes months before you get your XBOX back. 99% of all XBOXs are malfunctioning with all those disc read errors.

I just tested a CD-R and a regular audio CD on my XBOX. The CD-R got a disc read error and the regular audio CD started playing just fine.

Well, before they were doing it for free, but I'm not sure now (the number is 1-800-4-My-Xbox). And you will have it back in seven business days or less.

I find it kind of strange that the xbox won't read cd-rs. as I stated earlier I have a cd player that was made before cd-rs and it plays them just fine.

Windows XP works great, but XBOX is one Microsoft product that has problems. Disc read erros are my biggest complaint. Maybe XBOX has these kinds of flaws because it's Microsoft's first gaming console. Nintendo's first console, the NES, had a problem where the cartridges didn't always work so you had to blow on them. Hopefully the flaws currently present in XBOX will be fixed with XBOX Next.
To get back on topic, I have to agree with Travis that it is strange that CD-Rs won't read on XBOX. I find it even stranger that CD-RWs will read even though CD-Rs won't.

XBOX seems to have difficulty reading any disc. It even goes through disc read errors when attempting to load a brand new unscratched XBOX game. It takes a few tries just to get the game running.
