New Computer Build HELP!

Need some help to all you computer experts.
I am currently building a new system for a friend. He went on Ebay and purchased a New PC Chips motherboard (new in the box even) along with a new case and a 400 watt power supply.
The board runs socket 370 processors as in Pentium 2 and Celeron but this one CAME with a VIA Giga Pro 600 mhz chip and a stick of 64 mb SD RAM.
I added out of my own pocket a 540 meg gig hard drive and a 32x CD ROM.
I hooked everything up and tried to load windows 98 (my friend says that windows 98 will work until he gets a stick of 256 SD RAM and a 40 gig Hard Drive) but windows did not want to load all the way. It keep having problems right at the detecting hardware phase.
I tracked down the problem to the stick of 64 meg SD RAM. Bad stick. So I gave a stick from my own system to him. (I am down to 128 for XP >
)
I proceed to load 98 and it worked and was stable.
I then got him a 1 gig drive and am now trying to load 98 and ME but both will not take.
Any ideas? What Am I doing wrong?

What's the point of having a community? Or having a message board? I'm still kind of new at this, but I thought it was so that people could share the wealth of knowledge and experiences they have with each other, whether it be advise on something or help with a problem. And to also enjoy each others' company? I must be a n00b for thinking that

| People asking for advice is fine with me and I will help where I can, but almost constantly asking for advice on buying different computer or components and now for advice on building a computer is a little bit indecisive don't you think. |
What's the point of having a community? Or having a message board? no need, It was a problem with a video driver and i fixed it. thanks everybody (who helped)

Kona....most, as in almost all, problems with an OS install are Driver problems.
One of the reasons why ME is lauded as being the worst MS OS of all time is just that......the miracle is that it CAN be installed on a system at all..Stick with 98 [se] if you can.....it's infinitely superior to ME in terms of capability to be used on 'most' systems...

Jafo the system is running 98 SE with all updates and it is suprisely stable right now.

For me, 98se has been 'second-best' to XP....as even 2K kept falling over due to dodgy hardware support.....traditionally 2 or 3 BSODs per day.
If it's 'old and small' then 98se goes onto it...if it's bigger and newer it's XP.....and that's about it...

Kona, just a thought ever decided on going to college to learn about computer maintenance?
You don't realize the amount of forums that have "help my drivers fail to install, help this help that" and its same people that keep breaking things and will not learn from their experiences.
It crack's me up seeing people still using 9x and wonder why things go tits up, when 9x makes the baby jesus cry. As you will probably know how computer repair shops make a fortune out of these people.
It might make the world a difference to advance on any skills and get to know how to troubleshoot what went wrong.

Ok now that the problem was solved. I need a little help my self.
My cousin bought a hard disk (WD Caviar 40 GB) about 8 months and all of the sudden it got stuck. Is there any way to get a stuck disk to run again, other than smashing it against the floor?

Me too. With MS dropping support for the entire 9x kernel family 16 Jan, people are going to be out of luck. FWIW, we (at work) have been directed to remove all 9x machines from the network by 31 Dec. Thank goodness I have my division up to XP. A division I work closely with still has over 400 systems on 9x...I'd hate to be them.
No matter how good you are or how long you've been at it (almost 25 years for me) we all run into a stumper every now and then. I still believe that computers throw obstacles in your way just to test you.
