GIMP for Windows, will not install. Why?

Wednesday, December 3, 2003 by White_Moth | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I have installed Gimp for Windows before on my computer (Windows ME), several times in fact and everything worked fine. But now for some reason, it will not install. I have installed the proper GTK support files prior to instaliing The Gimp. This is the only message I get after it tries to create a new Directory:

"Installation will now abort, C:\SINGULAR\HOME\SINGULAR\.gimp-1.2
Failure - Cannot create Directory - No such file or directory
Insatllation failed. Contact system administrator."

Any help in shedding some light on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Is that a period in front of the directory name? I think that may be your problem.. If I remember correctly Windows isn't real keen on directories that start with periods..

It tries to create the Sub Directory C:\SINGULAR\HOME\SINGULAR\.gimp-1.2 automaticaly but fails, and apparently has done it before without a hitch on several occasions.

Still at a loss in what to do, I like using The Gimp, now I can't..

you have to install a seperate file first.
I have that file if you need it.

What file would that be, Kona?

I am not interested in .gif's.

Is there some other file? I searched all the pages and links thru the link you provided, but found nothing that seemed to help me with the problem I stated in my first post. Could you clarify for me what file you are speaking of?

Thank you.

Yeah, the GTK is needed. If you want to install a bit easier, get the installer files from http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/ That's how I installed GIMP. Yes, it has the latest stable release and GTK links. Everything worked for me. Give it a shot.

Thanks for the advice everyone, but still no luck. So, with a helping hand from a very generous person, I will moving up to Windows XP.

Windows ME worked well enough for two years, but lately, it has begun to turn on me.

Check CygWin out, I don't know, but it might be helpful... in some way.

Shudder...I used ME for approximately 2 hours. Then I upgraded to Windows 98 SE. ME just suffered in all areas from the 1.0 bug. MS introduced a ton of stuff in it without apparently making sure it works.
